President's Message
From the President,
Good day everyone. The holiday season approaches. There will be some changes to the holidays for the club. November will be Jigs and Fixtures. Get your pictures ready and even short videos and send them to Mel Bryan (mrwudb@gmail.com) for the slideshow or be prepared to share your screen with them. This is always an interesting meeting to learn of other methods and ways to make our woodturning easier, safer, and more fun. Also, elections for Treasurer and Vice-President will be in November. December is usually our banquet time, and since we will not be holding one this year we will not be meeting.
Especially, remember the library display and get your items ready and bring them to the library at 10AM on Nov. 22 (Monday). (Refer to the MCPL Display box in this newsletter for more information.) If you cannot make it then, please contact Mel Bryan (816-830-0107) or myself (816-288-7587) or by email and we'll work out some way to collect your items. It is important to let people know that the craft is still out there and doing well. This is also a great place to get kids interested in turning.
Remember the live demo for October was on the 11th and that it takes the place of our normal demonstration in the regular meeting. We will still be having a monthly meeting on the 19th. So, get your show & tell sent to Mel Bryan.
I know the last year has been hard on the club members to get motivated about the club since we are not meeting in person. The club, though, still needs everyone’s participation in meetings and events. One idea we have kicked around before is a cookout. Since we are not having a banquet this year, maybe in the spring, we could get everyone together outdoors for a get together. The club officers would like to hear from you on your ideas to help keep members interested. I hope to see everyone at the club zoom meeting on the 19th.
Turn safely,
Ron Bruno, President, IWT

Offcuts from the Board
October 2021
As woodturners, we do not have much scrap, just smaller pieces that can be used together to make something larger in combination with other bits and pieces. That's what this little section attempts to produce. By adding the small parts of our activities and plans we have a combined bigger picture of opportunities to take part in within the club.
- Please note that all public meetings of the club are on hold because of the COVID-19 self-quarantine restrictions. We are having our meeting virtually on line. Please refer to the information in other sections of the newsletter on how to prepare and participate in those meetings.
- Be sure to check on our website for the current status and information on club activities. The address is; independencewoodturners.org (Ref. the following article about the website.).
- Members, please join us on Facebook where you can see what others are doing and you can post your own projects and artwork.
- As a reminder, the membership dues became $20 a year beginning January 2020, and only emailed newsletters will be sent. Dues payments being collected now will go for the 2022 year's dues. They may be paid by either; sending a check to Mel Bryan, Treasurer with the check made out to "Independence Woodturners" at; 204 NW Redwing Dr., Lee's Summit, Mo. 64063. Or you may pay by PayPal by either one of two options. You may pay by going to the web address, PayPal.me/indepwoodturners or via our website. To pay, using the website, as a member, sign in to our website, Independencewoodturners.org, using the userid you were given when you joined. Once you sign in, go to the "Members Only" tab and click on "Financial". If you've misplaced your id or have trouble, please contact either Ron Bruno or Mel Bryan for assistance.
- Want to help out? Check out the "Want Ad" below.
- The officers would very much like to hear from you, the members, any thoughts and ideas you might have as to what you would like to see from the club within the abilities, guidelines and purposes of the club. Therefore, feel free to contact any officer with your input. You can use any of the officers' email addresses listed above or the club email address; indepwoodturners@gmail.com
- There are many ways you can contribute to the life of our club. A really good way is to partake in the Open Shop by bringing a project or turning and get a lathe going. Another way is to submit your woodturning tips also for the newsletter. (Refer to the article later.) Of course there are many other ways to put your enthusiasm into action. You can ask any officer for direction. There are many practical ways to be involved. A simple way to help is to come early to the meeting and help set up the room for the meeting and/or stay afterwards and help clean up. Either or both are appreciated.
Keep turning safely and we’ll see you at the meeting.

Our Last Meeting
As we continue to follow the self quarantine restrictions, instead of physically meeting, we have been holding our meetings virtually online.
The demonstration last month was a prerecorded video with Jerry McMaster showing how he does the texturing and piercing on his woodturnings.
Jerry started out by showing how he thin turns his vessels preparing for the piercing. He explained and showed how he made his patterns for the designs he applies and some guidelines on making them pleasing looking. Before any piercing, Jerry does the wood burning and texturing to avoid accidently breaking the pierced work.
The piercing is done with a high speed pneumatic tool that turns at 400,000 rpm making the cut smooth and controllable. After piercing, he cleans out the holes with a slower rpm tool then does a very light touchup sanding to prepare for coloring and finishing.
After demonstrating the piercing, Jerry kindly gave us a very interesting tour of his studio and workshop.

Woodturning Display
As a woodturner of the Independence Woodturners club you have the excellent opportunity to show your creativity and skillfully turned work to the public. We have been invited to display our work in the Mid-Continent Public Library at the Lee's Summit East branch located at; 2240 SE Blue Parkway,
Lee’s Summit, MO 64063, just east of the Lee's Summit Hospital. This is a great way to promote our craft and our club free of charge. At the same time it will allow other people to admire your work. The display will start November 22nd and go until December 19th. Details have been emailed to all members with signup instructions and a reminder will follow soon. So, please consider what you would like to put on display. It does not have to be a recent turning and all levels of skill are welcome. Your items will be safely locked in the glass case. The display case is very good sized and has room for many pieces. So, let's show the public the fun you've had and the creativity you've put into your craft of woodturning.
