Relax in the quiet beauty of Sandpoint's fall colors

Peak color in Sandpoint

Hike, drive, bike ... see our autumn beauty!

No matter your flavor of outdoor recreation - biking in the mountains, hiking a trail right in town, or even taking a leisurely scenic drive - one thing's for certain: North Idaho color is at its peak in October. Tamaracks are particularly brilliant this time of year, and they're easy to locate dotting the landscape against the evergreens. Revel in the quietness of walking paths (like the Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail pictured here, a local waterfront treasure), bike trails, and even the lake. Get the full rundown of autumn excursions on Visit Sandpoint's Fall Things to Do page. And if you're looking for more info about that leisurely drive, see more on the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway page. And see falls colors from the lake aboard a Lake Pend Oreille Cruises voyage.

Chills & thrills, if you dare

Scarywood Haunted Nights are here

Get ready for a month of screams as Silverwood Theme Park transforms into Scarywood Haunted Nights - Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in October. The theme park you thought you knew just became the nightmare you'll never forget! As seen on Travel Channel's "Halloween's Scariest Thrills," Scarywood is full of haunted attractions and roaming monsters. Experience five haunted attractions, nine scare zones, and most of Silverwood's signature rides in the dark. Tickets are in limited supply; click to buy online. Scarywood is located just 30 miles south of Sandpoint on Highway 95.

Trails all to yourself

Or mostly, anyway. What we love about the quiet solitude of October is the chance to hit popular trails without discovering everyone else beat you to the trailhead! A great one to hit up is Maiden Rock Trail - a steep 2-mile trail that leads down Maiden Rock, a prominent geologic feature, and a Forest Service recreation site on Lake Pend Oreille. The trail cuts through a dense forest in a deep notch between two mountains; access is 11 miles south of Sandpoint on Highway 95 via the north end of Blacktail Road. Get more details on the Visit Sandpoint Hiking Page. Safety note: Wear bright colors during North Idaho's hunting season.

Thinking about a Schweitzer season pass?

Prices for Schweitzer's season passes go up after Oct. 31 - something to keep in mind if you're contemplating a winter on the mountain! View pass options. The resort is poised and ready for a big winter, including the completion of its Humbird hotel - Schweitzer's newest lodging that is now booking for Feb. 1, 2022, and beyond. Check availability here.

We have a winner ... of our getaway contest

Honors front-line workers

In recognition of the dedication and difficulties of front-line workers during the pandemic, we held a Sandpoint Getaway contest for a front-line worker who could use it. We invited anyone to nominate a front-line worker – including those who wanted to put in their own name. The winner, drawn at random, was Nathan of Libby, Montana, who was nominated by his wife, Michele.

Here's what Michele wrote: My husband works at the hospital as an x-ray technologist. He has worked hard all through the pandemic and has not had much of a break. They are shorthanded at the moment, so that puts more pressure on him. He often stays 1-2 hours after his day shift is over to help with extra patients or emergencies. They call him in even on his days off and he goes in willingly and with a good attitude. He always gives his best effort … even in 2021, especially the last 2-3 months, his exposure to COVID patients has been more frequent, putting himself at risk to help others. I am amazed at what a man of compassion, diligence and great work ethic he is!

We were amazed too, at the heartfelt responses we got from so many of the entrants. So we’ve collected many of the compassionate stories telling how our front-line workers have sacrificed during the pandemic. Click to read them»

As for that prize: It includes two nights’ lodging at Cedar Street Hotel & Suites, a terrific cruise with Lake Pend Oreille Cruises, two passes for a day of fun at Silverwood Theme Park, certificates for food and beverage at Trinity at City Beach, MickDuff's Brew Pub and Pend d'Oreille Winery, and copies of local books guidebooks for our lake and mountains from Keokee Books. Thank you to all who entered... and keep an eye out for future contests we will be holding.
