Dear Fellow Mountain Lovers,

Autumn has begun, bringing with it cooler nights, wetter mornings, and children back to school. We hope you are out on the land, enjoying the beauty that surrounds and nourishes us!

The Other Side of the Mountain

Have you ever wondered what’s on the other side of the mountain from you? We know that many adults haven’t, so we’re aiming to help their children notice.

Our pilot education project for sixth graders in ten schools around the mountain aims to inspire awe of our natural surroundings, foster connections, and build a sense of place. In collaboration with the Sonoma Ecology Center, SMP will offer a science-and-writing unit, which includes a field trip, writing (poems and journaling that will be shared with kids on the other side of the mountain), and ways to comprehend, mitigate, and take personal action to address climate change. Our mountain gives us hope, and we aim to share that with our youth.

Defensible Space Resources

Resilient Landscapes Coalition has created a very informative and invaluable resource that illustrates the implementation and use of "defensible space" zones to not only protect your home from imminent fire, but also create a resilient landscape that's water-wise and promotes biodiversity. View the article here, and then explore the website to learn more about plant communities and other aspects of fire-wise landscaping.

Images to Inspire You

In case you missed it, SMP was honored to participate in the Glen Ellen Forum, along with the Jack London State Historic Park and Sonoma Land Trust, to discuss the wonders of Sonoma Mountain. We shared information and collaborated about programs and campaigns, discussed our visions for the future. Tune in to our conversation in the video below, where you will find no shortage of stunning images of Sonoma Mountain.

Sonoma Mountain Preservation will be stationed at the Glen Ellen Village Fair. With kids' activities, art, food, and wine, there's something for everyone. This year's theme is "The Good Ol' Days." Stop by to say hi and learn more about our work and how you can support it.

In Where the World Begins, we find ourselves leisurely immersed in a timeless pastoral countryside. Reading each chapter tunes up our senses and summons all of us to slow down, listen, exhale and then discover for ourselves that rare vista, ancient oak or redwood.
