WIDI WIRE

Edition # 4

Welcome / Wominjeka

The Workforce Innovation and Development Institute (WIDI) acknowledges
the people of the Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung language groups of the
eastern Kulin Nation and the other various Indigenous groups on whose
unceded lands we conduct our business. We respectfully acknowledge
their Ancestors and Elders, past, present and emerging.

Message from the Director

Participants in WIDI's Leadership Intensive Program have observed that common assumptions about leadership often have gendered roots which lie in formalised and male dominated practices. Many of these participants felt more alignment with practices that challenged oppression, incorporating reflective leadership practices drawn from ‘adaptive’ and feminist principles and values.

WIDI is interested in the nature of such adaptive and feminist leadership practices and how they might build new cultures of leadership into the family violence and other parts of the social service sector.

Family Safety Victoria engaged WIDI to explore this further to provide insights for the Family Violence sector as it grows and adapts.  Our report - Dangers Hope: Feminist Leadership in the Victorian Specialist Family Violence and Prevention of Violence Against Women Sectors - outlines the findings from this research.

Micaela Cronin
FEMINIST LEADERSHIP
On the 29th September, WIDI's Director Micaela Cronin was joined by an impressive panel of guest speakers: Eleri Butler, CEO of Family Safety Victoria, Emily Maguire, lead researcher of WIDI's Feminist Leadership research project and Emma Fulu, Founder and Executive Director of the Equality Institute for this Fireside Chat discussing feminist leadership within the family violence sector.

It is with great sadness that WIDI says farewell to Lee Newnham in October. Lee has been with the Institute since inception, where she began as
Executive Assistant to the inaugural FSSI Director, Professor David Hayward.
Lee joined the Institute because she recognised the vital importance of the social service workforce and wanted to make a contribution to supporting this workforce to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the community.

Over time, Lee took on an expanded role managing the Institute’s operations with her skills, commitment and thoughtfulness making her
an indispensable member of the team.

On behalf of the WIDI Team and the WIDI community, we would like to acknowledge and thank Lee for the passion and dedication that she brought to her role and for all of her hard work to make the Institute a success. We wish Lee all the best as she starts another chapter focusing on
her family, her farm and new adventures.

Thank you Lee!
