Michigan Sentences: Here is an article the psychologist Norbert Schwarz coauthored when he was a professor at Michigan. It involves the role language plays in sports rivalries. Syllabus Sentences: Here is a set of three short chapters I use to help students learn about both the Rule of Three and legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler. The chapters all appear in the most recent version of the series The Syntax of Sports. Note: A 80-second clip of Coach Schembechler's "The Team. The Team. The Team." speech can be found here.

Nuance Spotlight:
Paper Lion by George Plimpton (1966)

Here's a couple of Notes on Nuance moves we've learned in the past. Each appears in Paper Lion, a classic of participatory journalism in which the writer George Plimpton takes a shot at training camp with the Detroit Lions.

"Almost"
"The thought often crossed my head that he looked askance at my participation, thought it may have been his manner, which was prim, almost stiff, the demeanor of a company executive."

"Much Less"
"It was not easy to look at his knee, much less the napkin design of what had happened to its interior."
