Insights on Northwest Syria

Monthly Updates from FSL Cluster

Mid-Year Review (MYR) process in Northwest Syria has been completed in September 2021 and already integrated into the "FSL gap analysis" database (traffic lights).
  • The MYR has generated the following results:
    • 4,627,721 people currently live in NW Syria in the areas accessible by the FSL partners, based on the latest update on population from OCHA.
    • 3.6M people in need in NW Syria, with an increase of 202,306 people from the previous review.
    • The review number of people in need of food assistance is 3,396,864 in 40 sub-districts in NWS.

JULY 2021 - Key Achievements of FSL Cluster Partners in NW Syria


  • 40 partners implemented SO1, SO2 and SO3 activities in northwest Syria (NWS) in July 2021.
  • In July 2021, FSL partners delivered food assistance to the People in Need (PIN) in NWS, according to the following percentage of beneficiaries in 40 sub-districts (SDs) in NWS: 
    • 3 sub-districts reached above 100% PIN,
    • 2 sub-districts from 100% to 76% PIN,
    • 9 sub-districts from 75% to 51% PIN,
    • 9 sub-districts from 50% to 26% PIN, and 
    • 17 sub-districts were covered by less than 25% PIN.
  • In July 2021 a total of 1.7M beneficiaries were assisted through the distribution of 334K regular food assistance including food baskets, cash, or vouchers for food.
    • About 34K households (HHs) received an amount of 2,074,440 USD as vouchers for food (the voucher value is around 60 USD for each household), while 6K HHs received an amount of 385,800 USD as cash for food. 
  • 2.3M beneficiaries had access to bread and flour distributions (including WFP assistance through the corporate partners that distributed 15kg of flour to 1.3M beneficiaries).
  • 110K beneficiaries received Emergency Food Assistance.
  • 326K beneficiaries were supported by programs on agriculture, livestock, irrigation and livelihoods assistance from January to July 2021.

COMMUNICATIONS UPDATES


In August 2021, in addition to the regular monthly meetings (3 Area Coordination Groups, Agriculture TWG, Livestock TWG, Bread and Bakery CG, FSL Cluster Monthly Meeting), FSL Cluster has participated in the Inter Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG-OCHA), STIMA and HISMA meetings led by OCHA.

The communications activities on Agriculture and Livelihoods are on progress: FSL Cluster has prepared a new Factsheet on livelihoods, a position paper on Agriculture and Livelihoods, and a Workshop that will take place on 20 & 21 October, 2021.

AREA COORDINATION HIGHLIGHTS


IDLIB & WESTERN ALEPPO GOVERNORATES
  • 42 FSL partners implemented activities in July 2021 (41 partners on SO1, and 4 partners on SO2 - SO3).*
     
  • Out of 20 sub-districts in Idlib and West Aleppo governorates, 2 sub-districts were covered by food assistance above 100% PIN (Jisr-Ash-Shugur, Mhambal), 2 SDs from 100% to 76% PIN, 5 SDs from 75% to 51% PIN, 6 SDs from 50% to 26% PIN, and 5 SDs (Ariha, Qourqeena, Salqin, Harim, Sarmin) were covered by less than 25% PIN.
     
  • 27 FSL partners have planned to implement food security programs in the next 3 months from October to December 2021 (27 partners on SO1, and 4 partners on SO2 - SO3).
*Some FSL partners implement projects under more than one Sector Objective.
NORTHERN ALEPPO * (A'zaz, Jarablus, and Al-Bab Districts)
  • 26 FSL partners implemented activities in July 2021 (22 partners on SO1, and 10 partners on SO2 - SO3).**
     
  • Out of 13 sub-districts in A'zaz-Jarablus and Tell Abiad corridors, no sub-district was covered by food assistance from 100% to 75% PIN, 1 SD was covered from 75% to 51% PIN, 1 SD was covered from 50% to 26% PIN, and 11 SDs (Mare, Ar-Raee, Suran - Aleppo, Al Bab, Tell Abiad, Jarablus, Ras Al Ain, Arima, Ein Issa, Ghandorah, Suluk) were covered by less than 25% PIN.
     
  • 25 FSL partners have planned to implement food security programs over next 3 months from October to December 2021 (21 partners on SO1, and 9 partners on SO2 - SO3).
*Including 4 sub-districts Ras Al Ain, Ein Issa, Suluk, Tell Abiad.

NORTHERN ALEPPO (Afrin District)
  • 20 FSL partners implemented activities in July 2021 (19 partners on SO1, and 2 partners on SO2 - SO3).*
     
  • Out of 7 sub-districts in Afrin, 1 sub-district was reached by food assistance above 100% PIN (Jandairis), no SDs were reached from 100% to 76%, and 3 SDs from 75% to 51% PIN. 2 SDs were covered from 50% to 26% PIN, and 1 SD (Sheikh El-Hadid) was covered by less than 25% PIN.
     
  • 17 FSL partners have planned to implement food security programs over next 3 months from October to December 2021 (15 partners on SO1, and 4 partners on SO2 - SO3).
     
  • It is highly recommended to scale-up livelihoods programs in Afrin district (in 7 sub-districts). In July 2021, five activities were reported on agriculture, irrigation, livestock, and livelihoods programs implemented in Afrin district (Jandairis).
