News and Opinion

From The King's Fund:
From Health Service Journal:
  • Government launches biggest review of NHS leadership since 1980s
"The government is launching what it claims is the ‘most far-reaching review’ of NHS leadership since the seminal Griffiths report of the early 1980s... The review will be led by the retired vice chief of the defence staff, General Sir Gordon Messenger. The review will be supported by a team from Department of Health and Social Care and the NHS, led by Leeds Teaching Hospitals chair Dame Linda Pollard. The review “will work closely” with NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard..."
  • Integrated care systems and the inverse leadership rule
"In 1971 GP Julian Tudor Hart proposed the idea of the inverse care law. His tongue-in-cheek provocation stated: “The availability of good medical care tends to vary inversely with the need for it in the population served”... Many subsequent analyses of, for example, the geographic distribution of GP practices or the availability of infertility services have demonstrated the law’s ubiquity – although the forces that give rise to it are a lot more complicated than Dr Tudor Hart’s dim view of the market..."
From Forbes:
  • The Leadership Opportunity In Our Future Of Perpetual Uncertainty
"Most companies are not prepared to thrive in a future with so many question marks, because most companies have not unleashed the individuality of their people—a critical step in building the agility needed to react to changing realities in the world, in the marketplace and in the workplace...
  • The Changing Role Of Leadership In Unprecedented Times
"The coronavirus pandemic has presented new challenges for leadership; our roles are evolving and expanding rapidly—without a clearly defined path forward. This new way of working is pressing us to re-evaluate the critical skills needed to lead successfully and authentically..."
  • From Remote To Hybrid Working: The Role Of Leadership
"When the pandemic confined people to their homes and ushered in a new way of working, managers were wary of the possible challenges - but many employees thrived personally and professionally. Now we are moving to a Hybrid world of work, effective leadership becomes even more important...
  • Leadership Communication In Times Of Transition And Turmoil
"Values, connection, trust and vision are key ingredients to leadership in times of challenge and change, but a commitment to action is the rocket fuel to achieve escape velocity..."
  • The Trouble With Neurodiverse Leadership…
"Back in 2009, Professor Julie Logan reported that 35% of entrepreneurs were dyslexic versus 1% of corporate managers. So, what is the trouble with neurodiverse leadership? Why are we so good at starting things and what happens in a corporate setting that is so different?..."
  • What Covid Heroes Can Teach Us About Leadership
"Leaders must be investing in, rather than extracting from, employees, customers, and communities, while at the same time delivering needed products, services, and innovations to the global community. The Covid-19 pandemic brought out many such heroic and generative business leaders..."
From Harvard Business Review:
  • Every Leader Has Flaws. Don't Let Yours Derail Your Strategy
"The authors have identified four personality flaws of leaders and their specific impacts on strategy. For each type, they set out mitigating actions leaders can take..."
  • Research: Informal Leadership Comes at a Cost
"The authors conducted a series of studies with students and professionals in the U.S. and Taiwan, and identified a significant inverse correlation between informal leadership and both energy levels and satisfaction rates. They also found that support from formal leaders can mitigate these effects: When people’s formal leaders were unsupportive, informal leaders reported energy levels 20% lower than non-leaders, but with enough support, the difference actually completely disappeared. Based on these findings, the authors offer strategies to help both formal managers and informal leaders reap the benefits of informal leadership while minimizing its negative side effects..."
  • How to Be a Leader Who Stays True to Their Ethics
"If you aspire to lead ethically and with high purpose, first turn inwards. Take the time to have an honest conversation with yourself to help figure out what matters to you, and where your ethics lie. Next, align your senior team. Third, be prepared to be derailed. Unfortunately, at some point, pressure to meet shareholder expectations will derail your aspiration to lead with a higher purpose and values. And finally, don’t wait for the whistle to blow..."
  • Don’t Let Power Corrupt You
"The authors offer strategies for recognizing and avoiding these pitfalls. They outline how to cultivate humility and empathy as antidotes to hubris and self-focus, through actions such as establishing channels for honest input, creating visible reminders that success is fleeting, immersing oneself in other people’s jobs and experiences, and embedding interdependence in organizational systems. A balanced relationship with power can seldom be developed overnight, but in time, leaders who follow this advice will boost their own effectiveness and facilitate exceptional performance from their teams..."

Guidance and Research

From NHS Engalnd and NHS Improvement: Building strong integrated care systems everywhere

The Relationship Between Transformational Leadership Practices of First-Line Nurse Managers and Nurses’ Organizational Resilience and Job Involvement: A Structural Equation Model
"A descriptive correlational research design was conducted at a Saudi university hospital. The study consisted of 60 nurse managers and 211 nurses. Measures included Leadership Practices Inventory, organizational resilience, and job involvement questionnaires. Results were analyzed using inferential statistics and Structural Equation Modeling... In addition to the positive significant correlation found among the studied variables, First-Line Nurse Managers’ Leadership practices accounted for 43% and 40% of the variance of nurses’ organizational resilience and job involvement..."
Data-Based Self-awareness as the Foundation for Effective Leadership
"The AONL Nurse Executive Fellowship supports nurses who are new to an executive role in developing critical executive competencies. Participants engage in an in-depth specialized assessment process to help them understand themselves and the impact on their leadership. Learnings from the 1st 2 cohorts of fellowship participants provide insight into challenges faced by new executives and how self-awareness can improve performance to address those challenges..."
Inclusive Leadership and Pro-Social Rule Breaking: The Role of Psychological Safety, Leadership Identification and Leader-Member Exchange
"We used questionnaires to survey 303 employees at two time points. The results show that inclusive leadership has a significant positive impact on employees’ pro-social rule breaking, that psychological safety and leadership identification play mediating roles in this relationship, and that there is no significant difference between the mediating effects. Leader-member exchange moderates the indirect effect of inclusive leadership on pro-social rule breaking through psychological safety. That is, under a high level of leader-member exchange, inclusive leadership has a strong impact on psychological safety and pro-social rule breaking, but the moderating effect of inclusive leadership on employees’ pro-social rule breaking through leadership identification is not significant. This study provides guidance for improving the vitality of employees and promoting the development of enterprise rules..."
Leadership that makes a difference
"Two notable encounters taught the author to recognize and value the selfless actions of extraordinary leaders..."
How does responsible leadership affect employees’ voluntary workplace green behaviors? A multilevel dual process model of voluntary workplace green behaviors
"Drawing upon social identity and social information processing theories, we theorized and tested a multilevel model in which responsible leadership triggers employee voluntary workplace green behavior by fostering organizational identification and a green work climate. Additionally, we distinguished these two critical processes by introducing employees' green values as a moderator..."
