Loreto Highlights Update - 01st October 2021
Feast of St. Michael
The traditional ceremony celebrating the arch angle St Michael was held in the school chapel on his feast day, Wednesday 29th September.  The ceremony is one of thanksgiving and an appeal for protection. Loreto Convent has a special reason for thanking the angels and year 6 told the story explaining this.
Long ago, the Loreto Convent in York was attacked by armed men who were determined to destroy it.  One of the nuns ordered the picture of St. Michael to be hung over the door and, taking the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle, she and the other nuns knelt in the passage leading to the front door and prayed.  She called on the Lord; 'Great God save us, for we cannot save ourselves!'   Suddenly a deadly silence fell on the men outside and those who were going to attack the Convent began to move away.  As in the tradition in the school, four of our Foundation Stage 2 pupils carried candles along with a picture of St. Michael down the aisle, where it was placed at the foot of the alter.
Literacy To Life
Year 6 have been enjoying 'The Unforgotten Coat' by Frank Cottrell Boyce. They had great fun when they re-enacted the science experiment from the story.
Leaf Hunt
Year 1 went for a walk in our wonderful school gardens to search for autumn leaves so the pupils could do leaf rubbings as part of their art lesson.
Traffic Free Tuesday Is Back!
Pupils from the South District have walked to school together, as a group, every Tuesday in September, supporting the Traffic Free Tuesday initiative we started 3 years ago.  Does your child want to get involved? Contact the school here via email to find out more.
Mr Reader
Our Mr Reader awards scheme has commenced, our pupils have had their badges presented to them by Mrs Napoli and Ms Lombard, well done to everyone and keep reading those books!
Faith Diary

The Sunday Mass readings this week speak about marriage and the importance of family. At the end of the Gospel, the people are bringing their children to Jesus and, though for the past two Sundays Jesus has been teaching his disciples the value and importance of these “little ones” in the Kingdom of God, the disciples still try to keep them away. Jesus reprimands them and of course welcomes the children, presenting them as an example of the love and trust that ought to be in the heart of every believer. In the same way, by welcoming children and fostering their relationship with God, parents and families can pass on the faith and bear witness to the Kingdom of God.

Gardening Crew
Mr Devincenzi-Clemens has commenced the school's gardening club with pupils getting stuck straight in over the past 2 weeks.  The pupils have started to weed and prepare the planting beds, tidying their sowing tables using this area to sew a range of seeds to then plant on.  They have found many interesting insects, for example grasshoppers, worms, centipedes, silver backs to name a few.  The newly formed crew members are full of enthusiasm and have already come up with some great ideas on how to develop the school garden.
Parent - Teacher Meet & Greet
Over the past two weeks we have held Year group information evenings.  This was an opportunity to find out about the year ahead from the class and specialist teachers.  Parents were able to speak with their new class teacher and ask any questions.

Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary who were presented with their gold award certificates and gold pencils.
During their English lessons this week, Year 5 worked in groups to write a 'missing scene' from the play: "The Tempest."
Year 3 have been reading The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark by Jill Tomlinson.

The pupils have been learning about the main character, Plop, a beautiful baby barn owl who is afraid of the dark.

Here is a photo of Jasper who visited a bird display on his trip to visit family in Yorkshire.

He said “It’s like Plop!”
Foundation Stage 2 have been learning autumn poems and had a great fun collecting leaves in the garden.
“Leaves in the autumn orange and brown,
Flittering, fluttering floating down.
Leaves in the autumn yellow and red,
Lying on the ground like a bright bedspread.”
Alvaro’s dad won the Member and Guests Valderrama Tournament at the Valderrama Golf Club. He was awarded this trophy which Alvaro is very proudly displaying.
