Over the past week, our GES 5th graders have explored the cultures of Guinea, Cuba, and India through art and movement. The Arts Integration team (Ms. Ginn, Ms. Henry, Ms. Skees, and Ms. Qualls) has created an immersive and interactive way for our students to dive deeper into their Cultural Diffusion social studies unit by exploring the traditions that make cultures of the world both distinct and connected.
Students participated in cultural dance lessons led by members of Cincinnati’s Pones Dance Company. After examining some of the cities, foods, clothing, and other distinct characteristics of these countries, the instructors taught our students Kakilambe (Guinea), Salsa (Cuba), and Bollywood style dances (India).
Mrs. Qualls has also incorporated these social studies lessons into her art classes. By the end of the unit, students will produce art that expresses their understanding of cultural diffusion during migration to America. The goal is for our students to represent themselves and the cultures that influence their community through a multi-layered art piece of personal significance.
The GES Arts Integration program was made possible through a federal grant provided by the Northern Kentucky Institute for Arts Education (NKIAE) and the Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services (NKCES). This is our fourth year participating in this grant, and each year focuses on integrating art with a different subject area (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies).
