Dear Neighbor,

Saturday, October 2nd is a big transit day in our city! I will be sending you newsletters in the coming weeks specifically about the budget process and addressing homelessness in District 6. I want to use this special "transportation edition" of the newsletter to keep you informed on the transit oriented changes and events occurring in North Seattle this weekend and this month.

Below you will see announcements about the opening of the John Lewis Memorial Bridge, the restoration of key bus routes from King County Metro, the opening of the Northgate Link including three light rail stations, and a couple of events to attend in celebration.

When riding transit be sure to wear your mask, maintain physical distancing, and bring your vaccination card if you are attending an event or enjoying a restaurant that requires proof of vaccination. I hope to see you out and about this weekend to celebrate!

Three New Link Light Rail Station Openings

On October 2nd, the Northgate Link Extension will open with three new Link light rail stations. This line features the Northgate Station, the Roosevelt Station, and the U District Station. With a projected ridership of 41,00-49,000, this section of light rail spans 4.3 miles and will operate every 8 minutes during peak hours.

Our region is growing and our transportation system needs to grow with it. A high speed rail system will allow people to move faster with less climate impact. I look forward to a future of high speed rail options. Speaking of which, the very first train will depart from the Northgate Station at 4:51 am Saturday morning. It's truly something to celebrate!

If you'd like to do a virtual walk through or learn more about each station you can do so at this website.

Opening of the John Lewis Pedestrian and Bike Bridge

Join me at the John Lewis Memorial Bridge opening celebration on Saturday, October 2nd from 10am – noon!

When I worked in Olympia I fought hard to get the catalyst funding for this important project to reconnect the two sides of Northgate after I-5 split the neighborhood 60 years ago. The 1,900 foot bridge is accessible to all ages and abilities. Plus it will offer a direct connection for pedestrians and bikes between North Seattle College and the Northgate Transit center, including the new Northgate Link light rail station.

Visit SDOT’s webpage to learn more about the project and the opening celebration.

King County Metro Service Restoration

Big changes are coming to transit service starting Saturday, October 2nd as King County Metro launches updated connections to the three new Sound Transit Link light rail stations in Seattle.

Metro will also restore 36 previously suspended bus routes across King County, add hundreds of bus trips, and revise and improve other service in partnership with the City of Seattle. Together, these changes will support the region’s recovery and connect more riders to destinations.

Here in District 6 we will see service restorations, revised bus routes and other changes, including:

  • The 5X route will be replaced by the 16X route, which will operate peak-only services on weekdays between Broadview and downtown Seattle, including Greenwood.
  • Route 15X, 17X, and 18X will be fully restored to pre-COVID-19 levels.
  • Route 40 will no longer stop at the Northgate Transit Center and will go to bays 1 and 4 at the new Northgate Station and will add additional night owl service times.
  • Route 44 was revised to better serve the new U District light rail station. It will now enjoy its own eastbound bus only lane on NE 45th St. between Roosevelt and 15th Ave NE and a southbound business access and bus lane along 15th Ave NE between NE 40th and NE 45th. There is more work to come on this route. Click here to learn more about this project.

You can see a full list of route revisions on King County Metro's website.
