Introducing our PTSA Student Liaisons
Hello, we are the PTSA student representatives for the 2021-2022 school year at Jackson, Gursimar (Gigi) Tonk and Juliana Davis, and we’re super excited to work with the PTSA this year, as it will be our last year at JHS! Currently, we are working on multiple projects to increase COVID safety at school among the students at Jackson. We are creating posters that encourage students to wear their masks and we have also finished a COVID feedback form for all the students to fill out. In this form, students will tell us their thoughts on COVID safety at Jackson, as well as feedback on how the school can improve safety measures. After the posters, we both are planning on creating a video that talks about proper mask wearing and other COVID safety practices that the students must follow since staff members have found that some students are having slight difficulty with following some of the rules in the hallways and cafeteria. Our posters and video will remind students to keep their masks over their nose AND mouths, because wearing one’s mask correctly is very important.

Thank you to the JHS PTSA for letting us be a part of this community so we can make Jackson a better place. And thank you for reading our student liaison piece in the PTSA newsletter.

September Membership Meeting Summary
At our September Membership Meeting, we introduced our 2021-2022 PTSA Board of Directors, voted in our updated mission and goals and standing rules, went over our social media policy, and heard school updates from the principal and our staff liaison.

Reflections Art Contest

Reflections is a National PTA arts recognition program that helps students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful not only in school, but in life.

Students create original works of art in response to a theme. The theme for the 2021-2022 program year is I Will Change the World By… Students submit their completed works of art in one, or all, of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.

The Theme Search entry form can be found here and entries are due by November 1st, 2021. Entries should be emailed to: reflections@wastatepta.org.

Advocacy

WSPTA Legislative Assembly

The purpose of legislative assembly is to determine the legislative priorities of Washington State PTA (WSPTA), to educate and mobilize advocates, and to advance WSPTA’s legislative program.

At legislative assembly, you will discover the power PTA has to advocate for every child – the whole child – regardless of race, creed, gender, or zip code. In PTA, every member has an equal voice, and your input matters a great deal to the success of WSPTA's member-driven platform.

This year's legislative assembly will be held virtually October 23-24, 2021. Jackson High School PTSA will be sending 5 delegates to represent our PTSA.

For more information, please see the WSPTA website: Legislative Assembly (wastatepta.org)

Don't miss Executive Director Andrew Estep's blog post where he talks about parliamentary procedures. He shares, "One of the principles underlying parliamentary procedure in a meeting is that every member present should have an equal voice and vote. This is one of the reasons why I love parliamentary procedure. At its core, it is profoundly democratic. However, there are a few barriers that come with this." Read the full post here.

Input from families is needed on the draft revised cultural competency, diversity, equity and inclusion educator standards. Tennis
The JV boys tennis team is currently 4 wins and 6 losses so far this season.  The JV is made up of 9th and 10th graders only and are playing a very good schedule and competing hard and hopefully will be able to do well in the last 3 weeks of the season.

The boys varsity tennis record is currently 5 wins and 6 losses so far this season.  The boys have a difficult schedule this year by adding King-Co teams and they have done very well.  All the losses are 3 wins to 4 losses this season so some very close matches but just ending up on the losing end of many of those matches this season.

Henry Park, 10th grade, and Ben Lee, 9th grade, have been exceptional this season and are the top 2 players in the league so far this season.  Looking forward to great things from these two players as they progress into playoffs.  Seniors on this year’s team are Darren Davis, Jaxson Powell, Yohan Lee and Cameron Herbison.  We have 6 more matches and look forward to finishing strong this year.

Cross Country
The Jackson Boys XC competed at the Bellevue Invitational held at Lake Sammamish State park with 68 other schools from ID, OR and WA on September 25th.  Nearly every runner ran a lifetime best (92% !!!) The varsity finished 11th place overall led by Sean Bubernak, Logan Johns, Jeremy Kim, Mason Koh,  Aarav Singh, Noah Freidrich and Daniel He. The JV boys placed 8th overall.

Jackson Boys remained undefeated in WESCO with both teams winning the JV and Varsity 4-way Wesco meet hosted by Snohomish with Mt Lake terrace and Marysville Getchel on September 23rd. The top boys were Sean Bubernak, Logan Johns, Mason Koh, Daniel He and Jeremy Kim.

The varsity girls had their first Wesco loss of the season after sweeping Lynnwood and Monroe.  They narrowly lost to Snohomish by 6 points but outperformed Terrace and Getchel.  The girls are led by Bailey Board, Emma Hamm, Selena Bangerter, Grace Jones and Arielle Levens.

Volleyball
Varsity volleyball is currently 5-2 for the season and is ranked 8th in state in 4A competition. The varsity girls placed 10th out of 24 in their tourney at the Kent Classic.

The JV team is off to an amazing season and is currently undefeated with a record of 7-0.

The C- team is also competing very well and is currently 6-1.  They took 2nd place in their first tournament at Jackson High School with 9 other schools.  The C-Team is continuing to work hard and get better every day!

Girls Soccer
Our JHS Girls Varsity Soccer is off to an excellent start with a current record of 7-1 and ranked 10th in state in 4A competition. They have outscored their opponents by a collective score of 31 to 7.

Our JHS Girls JV Soccer team is very competitive with many new players this season. They currently have 2-3-2 (ties). The team is up for the challenge every time they step on the field, and every game has been a battle decided by 1 goal.

Football
The Pack has been off to a decent start this season. Our Freshman Team is currently undefeated at 4-0 and looks forward to keep that momentum going. Coach Ryan Simmons and his staff have done a fabulous job of getting the Freshman dialed in each week.

Our JV team is currently sitting at 1-3 with a big win over Everett 32-2. Coach Tyler Watson and his staff have been working hard to get our players more fundamentally sound which will help them continue to grow and get better.

The varsity team started off slow, losing their first two games but have won their past two games over Inglemoor and Shorewood which were both away games. Our Varsity program is currently 2-2 and plays in its biggest game of the season on Friday at 5pm vs. Kamiak. Thank you for supporting The Pack. Go Wolves!!!

Girls Swimming and Dive
Our girls swim team is off to an excellent start and is undefeated with a record of 4-0 beating Mariner, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, and Mount Lake Terrace decisively.  The swim team has 38 girls in the swim program.  The dive team has currently five divers competing.

Land acknowledgement

In the district’s sustained work to build a culture of inclusive belonging for students, teachers, staff and the community, we join local, state, national and international efforts to acknowledge Native land.

According to the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, “In countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia, it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land.” Our Equity & Access Department encourages opening school and district events with this impactful Native land acknowledgment:

“We respectfully acknowledge that we gather today on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin, the San Juan Islands, and the North Cascades watershed since time immemorial. You are on Coast Salish Tribal Land.”
