All Hands on Deck!

We have a lot of postcards to VA voters that need to be written before next week. We’ll be writing these at Action Hour next Friday at 4-5, but we could use your help before then!

Postcard packets are available for your pick up any time this week at the same home where we hold Friday Action Hour. Stop by anytime to pick up as many packets as you have time to write this week. Each packet contains everything you need to write 10 postcards. There is NO CHARGE to individuals for these postcards. I-RISE is covering the costs to help ensure that we have enough writers.

Do not mail these postcards. All packets must be returned to the same location by the end of the day Saturday, October 8 to allow enough time to get them ready for bulk mailing by the 12th. If you need the pickup address, email indivisible.rise.newburyport@gmail.com. And join us Friday, Oct 7 at 4-5 pm to finish up these postcards to Virginia voters!

It’s That Time Again!

Immediately after Action Hour on Friday, October 7, we’ll break out the wine, beer and appetizers to spend some time socializing at our monthly Persistence Happy Hour. Please plan to stay after postcard writing, or join us just for Happy Hour from 5:15-6:30.  Email us at  indivisible.rise.newburyport@gmail.com if you need the Action Hour and Happy Hour address.

Getting Down to Business for the 2022 Midterms

Mark your calendars for our monthly Zoom meeting on Tuesday, October 19 at 7-8 PM when  two experts will  share information about tactical ways to get involved and move the needle for the 2022 Midterms. Discussion will include the best timing for participating in each tactic, why state races are important for our national delegation, and how we can best help make a difference in neighboring New Hampshire where much is at stake. You can pre-register for the meeting here.  Our speakers are:

Reid McCallum, co-founder of Postcards to Swing States, whose volunteers wrote 21 million postcards to voters in 2020. Postcards to Swing States became part of Progressive Turnout Project in 2021, and Reid directs the program full time.

Lisa DeMio is the Chair of the Democratic Committee for Hampstead, NH, a member of the Rockingham County Democratic Committee, Vice-chair and founding member of the RockHills Coalition, and Co-Chair and founding member of the Local Leadership Network.

Counter Social Media Disinformation

Join us with Acton and Andover Indivisible groups at Action Hours every Wednesday at 11AM or 5PM to help spread the truth and uncover and report the lies that proliferate and cause so much divisiveness and confusion among voters. We are training participants on posting with the Truth Brigade and monitoring social media with Common Cause -- you can choose to try one or both activities. If you already are trained, please join us to work together, share pointers, and enjoy the company. Register here.

Virginia’s Elections Are Critical to the Country

The entire nation is looking at Virginia this November as a bellwether for next year’s midterms. If Republicans win control in that state, they will be emboldened and our work to unseat them in the 2022 elections will be that much harder. Plus, the winners of these contested state seats will decide on redistricting, voting regulations, and other laws that have a direct impact on the US Senate and House.

Virginians already are heading to the polls with early voting, so there is no time to waste. Here’s how you can help Virginia elect a Democratic Governor, Lt Governor, Attorney General and House of Delegates on November 2nd:

Texting Opportunities

The rules for texting voters may be changing, but at least for now there are regular texting opportunities. Some options include:

  • Text low propensity voters in Pennsylvania to encourage higher turnout in their critical 2021 elections. Register here.

  • Text with MoveOn, which has active texting campaigns most weekdays. Recently, MoveOn was focused on texting every Democrat to encourage increased activism.

  • Check with Movement Labs for availability of varied and interesting campaigns. At the date of this newsletter, they are texting to engage more volunteers for Black Voters Matter and to increase rural voters’ support for Democrats.

In addition to these opportunities, bookmark this helpful guide to texting platforms developed and regularly updated by I-RISE and a collaboration of MA Indivisible Chapters.

Keep Working to Protect Voters

We need to pass the Freedom to Vote Act to uphold democracy for the people.

  • Contact the White House to urge President Biden to do everything in his power to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, including pressuring senators to reform the filibuster.  Call 202-456-1111 or email here.

  • Contact our Members of Congress to let them know you support the Freedom to Vote Act and ask them to keep pressing for its passage. Reach Senator Markey  at 202-224-2742 or 617-565-8519 or by email here; Senator Warren at 202-224-4543 or 617 565-3170 or by email here; and Congressman Moulton at or by email here. If your senator is from another state, call 888-453-3211 to reach them.  Find your representative’s contact information here (or your representatives if you live in another district)

  • Call Voters in Key States by joining a Common Cause phone bank. I-RISE hosts phone banks every Wednesday afternoon, and there are many other options to choose from throughout the week. Register here

Thanks to All who Joined the Women’s March

I-RISE and Women in Action Huddle members were among the close to 200 people who came together in Market Square in Amesbury this past Saturday morning. There was a great deal of camaraderie among the crowd, lots of encouraging honks and cheers from passing cars, and an inspiring speech by MA Representative Tram Nguyen. There also were some great signs, t-shirts and pins! For those who missed our local march, check out photos here. The Portsmouth and Boston Marches, of course, were even bigger. Thank you to all who joined forces with the many marchers near and far!
