THAMES VALLEY SWAMPFOXES:

Buller arrived at Boyd Park Te Aroha on Saturday with no fear and no respect for reputations. Consequently, they provided stiff opposition for Thames Valley in their Bunnings Warehouse Heartland Championship match.

In the end Buller lost the game 15-30 but with a half time lead of 15-8 they were in with a chance to gain a much needed victory. Their full back, and Buller player of the match, Jesse Pitman-Joass kicked a total of five penalty goals – an indication of the time Buller spent in Thames Valley’s half and a lack of discipline by the home team. The Swamp Foxes rarely looked a threat in the first half but they did manage to take advantage of one attacking phase to put Cameron Dromgool over for a try in the corner. Soon afterwards Tiaontin Raoren, filling in for Todd Doolin at first five this week, kicked a penalty goal.

Harsh words were spoken by the coaches at half time and a more focused Thames Valley side took the field in the second half. They immediately went on the attack and were rewarded with a try to Raoren. There was no conversion and then Buller were unlucky not to add to their score when another penalty attempt by Pitman-Joass bounced off the post. Mid way through the half Raoren scored his second try after a good build up by the forwards. He converted his own try to give the Swamp Foxes the lead 20-15.

The kick off by Buller went out on the full and from the resulting scrum, on the half way line, Luke  Masirewa picked up the ball and after a great solo effort scored a try. Once again there was no conversion and the game ended with Valley hot on attack and finally putting Trinity McQueen over for an unconverted try.

This was another bonus try victory and Thames Valley remain at the top of the points table equal with South Canterbury on 15 points. However South Canterbury have the better points differential which makes them the number 1 seed. Next Saturday Thames Valley meet West Coast in Greymouth.

For Buller: Jesse Pitman-Joass 5 penalty goals

For Thames Valley: Tiaontin Raoren (2) Luke Masirewa and Trinity McQueen tries. Raoren a conversion and a penalty.

This weekend the 'Swampfoxes' travel to John Sturgeon Park, Greymouth, taking on the dangerous West Coast in yet another must win match. This has been a traditionally tough place to travel for the Swampfoxes, only ever securing a draw as their best result in Greymouth since the start of the Heartland Championship in 2006. This result came in 2011 when they drew 17-17. They will look to put a stop to this weekend, however will be without a couple of key players who are stuck in Hamilton. This weeks match kicks off at 2.30pm this Saturday 9th October, of which there will be a livestream via the West Coast Rugby Union Facebook Page for people to tune in.

THAMES VALLEY
EMERGING PLAYERS XV

The Thames Valley Emerging XV showed heart and determination in their 25-43 loss to the Bay of Plenty Toa on Saturday at Rotorua International Stadium.

Although leading 14-12 at halftime, and were in with a chance of winning for most of the game, the wheels fell off in the last 12 minutes against a very good Bay of Plenty side. Thames Valley scored two first half tries through Mercury Bay try scoring machine Charlie Best, and the exciting midfield back BJ Lima, both converted by Taips Oliver-Samuels. In the second half, Taips Oliver- Samuels playing out of position at #10,  added to the scoring with two penalty goals from handy range and BJ Lima scored yet again to keep Thames Valley in the fight.

Although a frustrating loss, Thames Valley will take a lot of positives out of the fixture and continue to build towards the remainder of their campaign. Players to stand out were Jayden Tegg & BJ Lima in the backline, and Jacob Chaplin & Mike Savage were solid upfront.

This weekends match against the Waikato U19s is still going ahead at this stage. Waikato will need to wait until Friday to determine whether they will be able to play or not. If we get the greenlight, the match will be played at Morrinsville Rugby Club, 1.00pm Kick Off this Saturday 9th October.

THAMES VALLEY
UNDER 16s BOYS

The Thames Valley Under 16s suffered a tough loss at the hands of King Country on Saturday at Owen Delany Park in Taupo. Up against a well structured and physical King Country,  Thames Valley struggled to gain any momentum in a fairly one sided encounter. Although the score didn't go their way,  there were a few players that stood out. Hooker Brodi Springer gave it his all,  and made himself busy throughout the game,  whilst Mason Hammond was always involved with ball in hand and making his presence felt on defence as well.

Due to the Chiefs U16 Tournament not going ahead this weekend because of the current Level 3 restirctions affecting preparation & also a large scale event not able to go ahead at Level 2. The U16s will now play tomorrow night at Waihi Athletic Rugby Club, playing against the Bay of Plenty Wasps,  6.00pm Kick Off. Parents and supporters must talk to their managers regarding spectating as there will be limited numbers - so get in quick. There will be no livestream for this game. Match details below.

THAMES VALLEY
UNDER U18 BOYS

The Thames Valley Under 18's travelled to Clifton Rugby Club in Tikorangi on Friday night not arriving till 11.00pm. The accommodation at the fields was a great set up for us & the boys were in great spirits and very active throughout the following morning.

The boys hit the field hard and got into it straight away. An awesome try by Connor Woolston opened the scoring, which was followed by a penalty right out in front of the posts by Keegan Pace. Another awesome try was scored by Trent Bax and it was converted by Keegan Pace again, taking us to the half time score of 15-17 to Taranaki.

In the second half, a spirited effort ensured Thames Valley were right in the game until the final whistle, with two second half tries Ihaka Harper-Dent and Trent Bax the obvious highlight. The fulltime score went the way of Taranaki 43-29. However, it was an extremely gutsy effort from the Thames Valley team and a step up again this week from previous fixtures.
The team sends their wishes to Connor Woolston who had to be taken to hospital, we hope to see him back soon as he played outstanding before his injury.

Players of the day went to Trent Bax and Ihaka Harper-Dent.

Tamsin Armstrong (Team Manager)

This weekend, the Thames Valley U18s are back on the road, this time to Taupo where they will play against King Country U18s at Owen Delany Park, 2.00pm Kick Off. Good luck lads!

THAMES VALLEY
SECONDARY SCHOOL GIRLS:

The Thames Valley Secondary School Girls Vixens travelled down to Owen Delany Park last Saturday, to take on the King Country Ewe's. In what was always going to be a tough journey for our girls, they were up against a strong King Country side who have had consistently good results in 2021. The Vixens however, got stuck into their work playing some good rugby for large majority of the first half, however a few missed tackles and unforced errors meant they were found behind their posts on several occasions. Unfortunately, they conceded more points in the second half going down 10-61 in a spirited and much improved result from two weeks ago against the Harlequins. Scoring two tries, and also showing glimpses of gutsy defence, this bodes well for their next up fixture.

The Secondary School Vixens take on the Bay of Plenty U16 B side, at Waihi Athletic Rugby Club, Thursday 7th October, 3.30pm Kick Off (this game is tomorrow night). Parents and Spectators must talk to their manager, as their will be limited spectators yet again. There will be no livestream of this game.
