Saturday Celtic Evening Service
St Mary’s Church’s Celtic Evening Services continue through to the end of the year on the following Saturday evenings, beginning at 7pm in the Church:
October – 9th and 23rd, November – 6th and 20th, December – 4th
We are hoping to arrange a Celtic Christmas Service and details will follow in due course…so keep watch on the Noticeboard!!
The Celtic Evening Service is a service of the Word based around the Celtic ‘rules of life’. The service is no longer than 30 minutes and presents a peaceful and spiritual candlelit environment in which to sit, reflect on the week just gone and the week that is to come and listen to the Celtic liturgy.
For those who have not experienced a Celtic Service see blow a link to a service from the summer at St Mary’s. Celtic Society was agrarian, dependant for its health on weather, tides and seasons. It was not an easy time to be alive; life was hard and their spirituality draws us today. The Celts love of God, especially the Trinity, has much to teach us.
It was a missionary faith, taught by such leaders as Columba, Aidan, Cuthbert, Patrick, Bridget and Hilda, who were men and women of great faith and deep prayer stood up to the pagan religions of the day, bringing light and hope into the lives of the people to whom they ministered.
There are few authentic documents from the time of the Celts, the Lindisfarne Gospels, Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, St. Patrick’s Breastplate, the best known concludes as follows:

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

We would be delighted if you feel you can join us and experience Celtic tradition in our beautiful church. You will be made most welcome.

Prayers
(broadcast each evening on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
