Curriculum Night Follow Up

It was great to be able to connect with so many families on Curriculum Night and have the opportunity to speak to the core aspects of the Grade 5 program in Room 214. I've provided the slides here so that families can revisit the content or take a look at them if they were unable to attend last week.

Daily Reading

We are working on building routines around daily reading. Currently, daily homework is not being assigned, but students are expected to read for a minimum of 30 minutes at home each day. They should try to balance between reading in French and English as much as possible. Up until this point the Allenby library has been closed to students, however, we are planning to have it open to students very shortly and I will accompany them on their first visit so that they learn how to effectively browse the library collection and select appropriate reading materials. Following this lesson, students will be permitted to visit the library during the Junior Book Exchange periods. These will be shared as soon as the library is open. In addition to what is available in the school library, I will provide students with access to a rotating selection of French books and magazines in the classroom. Students are encouraged to access materials from home and through the Toronto Public Library as well. Once the library is open, students will only be permitted to read in French during our morning independent reading time. If you wish to purchase additional French reading materials for your child, consider purchasing through Scholastic. If you make a purchase using our classroom code, RC208042, a portion of your sales are donated to the classroom to purchase additional materials for students. Monthly flyers are available online.

Keeping In Touch

It is always my goal to provide timely and clear communication to families of students in room 214. If questions arise that are not answered in our class newsletter, or if you have concerns about your child, please contact me by email at andrea.payne@tdsb.on.ca. We will not be using a paper agenda book this year, so any notes are best sent via e-mail. My goal is to always send out my newsletters on Mondays. The Allenby Update (school and APA newsletter) is sent out on Fridays. So hopefully this structure will allow families to stay on top of all school communication. Please also follow our class on Twitter at @214Frimm for regular updates on what's happening in the classroom. You do not have to tweet anything - but following our class account is a helpful window into what your child is learning. You can also follow our Allenby P.S. account at @AllenbyPS_TDSB for school-wide updates.

Have a wonderful week!

Warm regards,
Andrea
