Warm Fall greetings to y’all! It’s hard to believe that Autumn is officially here - as is the new league year. This month we will be celebrating the season by having our general membership meeting at Isham Family Farm in Williston, Vermont complete with a pot luck, yoga and an opportunity for headshots taken by our very own Amanda Herzberger. What more could you ask for? The fall festivities continue later this month with a social outing to pick apples followed by a happy hour. That being said, when you aren’t getting your fall fix with farm visits and apple orchards, be sure and sign up to help out with a Done in a Day (DIAD),

mark #GivingTuesday on your calendars and think about helping with the process of implementing a new strategic plan for your league! As always, it’s a joy to serve this league and be a part of all of the exciting opportunities to “connect women, cultivate leadership, and collaborate with communities for meaningful impact."

Yours in Volunteering,

Mary-Katherine

REVISION OF AJLI MISSION STATEMENT
In 2019, an Advisory Resolution was put forth calling on the AJLI Board to review and consider revising our shared Junior League Mission statement to, “better emphasize the leadership potential of women.” A first draft of a revised mission statement was shared with leadership of all member leagues for review and comment during the month of September. AJLI has indicated that this was a first step in the revision process, and additional drafts and more robust opportunities to comment will follow. When the next draft is released, we will bring to the full membership for discussion.

Current Mission:
The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Proposal:
Connecting women, cultivating leadership and collaborating with communities for meaningful impact.

A message from the AJLI President and CEO with more information is available here.
JLCV STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS
The League’s three year Strategic Plan, which is available here, expired at the end of 2020. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, a conscious decision was made to delay creation of the next strategic plan until a better sense of the “new normal” emerged. While COVID-19 continues to impact us individually and collectively, the Board believes the time is now right to start the conversation about how we envision the League and the community impacts we want to make in the years to come.

The Governance Committee, which is a subcommittee of the Board, will be taking the lead on this process, and would welcome the involvement of additional members. The Committee will be meeting on October 26 at 6pm to hear from some of our senior members who were instrumental in developing the last strategic plan and begin plotting out the structure and process we will use to continue this work. If you have an interest in joining this committee, or would simply like to learn more, please reach out to Jenn Papillo.
Thank you,

Jennifer Papillo

LEAGUE SECRETARY

Each month the JLCV newsletter will feature a different committee or chair position to assist members both new and old in understanding the League and all its moving parts. This month's spotlight is on the League Secretary.

The League Secretary is a new position that combined the once corresponding and recording secretary roles. This role is a 2 year role on the JLCV Board of Directors, and plays an important role with tracking involvement in the league. This year's League Secretary is Cassie Gendron.

One of the main responsibilities of the League Secretary is attending and taking minutes for the board meetings and general membership meetings. The Secretary also records attendance at these meetings and DIADs as Junior League members work towards fulfilling their league requirements. Additionally, the secretary works within the internal website and directory to onboard new members, change member status, or assign new roles on member profiles.

As secretary you are not focused on one specific committee, but since it is a board position you are immersed in all the inner workings of the league. It also gives you the ability to hold other roles within the league that may be of interest! Cassie currently is on the Communications Committee and the Governance Committee (to go over by-laws, standing rules, strategic plan) while serving as your league Secretary! Please feel free to reach out to her if you have any questions about her role!

Thank you,

Cassandra Gendron

OCTOBER GMM UPDATE & SOCIAL EVENT
Happy October!

Our committee has been getting everything prepped for the October GMM that is being held at Isham Family Farms in Williston. Please see the details from Claudia regarding the yoga training, waivers to fill out and please bring your own yoga mat. The arrangements for this meeting will be potluck style so please sign up on this Google Doc to bring a dish for after yoga!

All members are strongly encouraged to arrive at 5:30pm to get an updated headshot taken by our very own Amanda Herzberger. This will be the first time since 2019 that headshots have been updated. Headshots serve a number of functions, including use in the JLCV newsletter, use as your AJLI thumbnail and on the JLCV public facing website. Like any nonprofit, optics are essential, and uniformity in our head shots is just one way to ensure that we as an organization are taken seriously. For tips on how to transition from headshots into yoga, see Katie Bensel's tutorial on the private Facebook page!

Upcoming Social Event for October:

What: Apple Picking
When: Saturday, October 23rd
Where: Yate's Apple Orchard in Hinesburg followed by Happy Hour led by Kim Bleakley, sign up on the website!

TRAINING UPDATE: OCTOBER GMM

Gentle Yoga with Sangha Studios

Sangha Studio Slow Flow Class with Junior League of Champlain Valley

Who:
Taught by Devon Penny, Sangha Studio - Williston Manager
When: Tuesday October 12, 2021 @ 6PM
Where: Isham Family Farm

We all know the women of JLCV are fearless, energetic and always up for an adventure! Therefore, it should be no surprise that several of you requested a yoga session as part of our GMM training.

This month, we are trying something a bit unique.

Starting at 5pm at the Isham Family Farm we will offer a Gentle Flow yoga session for 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute presentation by Sangha studios on their programs and philosophy. Sangha has a very special mission – to make yoga accessible to all interested parties, and is particularly supportive of non-profit organizations around the state. It’s motto – “come as you are”.

About Gentle Flow & Instructions for sign up:
(Masked) Gentle Flow is an accessible, all-levels class appropriate for students of various abilities or those who appreciate a slower, softer practice. Class will focus on connecting to the breath, releasing tension, and helping students to gently develop strength and flexibility. Variations will be given throughout class to accommodate students of all-levels.

Prior to October 12th, please sign up and sign a waiver.

Instructions for signing up are here:

  1. Each participant will need to sign our liability waiver, meaning they will need to make a MindBody account. Please share this link with each person planning to attend class.
  2. Please have all participants register for the private here - that we have them all in! (This is a unique link for our October 12th class – please register ahead of time).

 What to bring to class:

  • a yoga mat
  • comfortable workout/yoga gear
  • water
  • mask

Yoga is not everyone’s cup of tea – I hear that. If you have been thinking about trying this form of exercise, this is a chance to join a non-competitive yoga session which should appeal to all levels of experience from beginner to advanced.

Our regular GMM (including a potluck dinner) will begin immediately after the yoga session.

Thank you,

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KRYSTAL GRANZOW
Name:
Krystal Granzow

Hometown:
Red Oak, Texas

JLCV Position/Committee:
Community Projects Committee

Why did you join the JLCV?
I joined the Junior League of Champlain Valley to meet and work with a great group of women in my community who share the same vision of service as me. Being a member is more than discussing how one should help others. It's putting boots to the ground, implementing the action, and watching change to its completion.

Tell us about the position(s) you hold in the League.
I am part of the Community Projects Committee. I'm excited to assist in remodeling a room in the Ronald McDonald House and many other supporting roles under the Community Projects Committee.

What's your favorite JLCV memory?
My favorite memory is working with Food2Kids in the Junior League of Lubbock. Being able to stuff bags full of food to send home to children for weekend meals during the chaos of Covid was especially rewarding. It's a wonderful feeling to know that real people are helping real people.

What have you learned from being in the League?
I've learned that no matter how "small" or insignificant my volunteer work may seem, it makes a massive impact in the community that I love and cherish so dearly.

What are some other activities you do outside the League?
Outside of the Junior League Champlain Valley, I'm a mom of two beautiful children, a wife to the most handsome elevator man in the state, and a Ramsey Preferred Financial Coach.

I spend time volunteering at my children's school each week and love reading and listening to apologetic podcasts. I wrote a children’s book titled “Maddy Lou and Mack at the State Fair of Texas” and love traveling from school to school, reading my book to classes in author visits.  More than anything, I make sure to spend quality time with my family in this beautiful green mountain state.

#GIVINGTUESDAY

As we have mentioned in previous newsletters, last year JLCV participated in Giving Tuesday and it was a resounding success, raising over $10,000 for the Diaper Bank! This was an amazing opportunity for JLCV to highlight the wonderful work of the Diaper Bank, while also raising additional funds to sustain our state-wide distribution.

We are bringing back this amazing fundraising effort this year for our community projects. This year, #GivingTuesday is November 30th, and it will be here before we know it! The planning process is beginning, so if you are interested in taking on a more active role for this fundraiser, please reach out to Katie or Jessie at treasurer@jlcv.org
