I met Sergeant Dan about 5 years ago when he asked for assistance with a homeless individual who was causing problems because of his addiction. Instead of arresting this person on the spot, Sergeant Dan called and asked if I would be able to help him into a rehab program instead. I didn’t hesitate to drive right over and help place him into a treatment program.

This is when I started to gain a lot of respect for the Redwood City Police Department. I began to see they genuinely want to help our homeless on the streets and network with us. Sergeant Dan and I became friends. One day I asked him if he would be willing to volunteer at Street Life and help drive our food van. I knew that Sergeant Dan believes everyone should do community service, and since Redwood City is his community, he agreed to help. His girlfriend Susan also wanted to get involved, so she volunteered with him, and now they serve together.

Dan picks up the food at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City and drives it to our Bethlehem A.D. site in Redwood City. His girlfriend helps serve the food while Dan hangs out, then Dan packs everything up, and returns the food truck to the Peninsula Covenant Church parking lot.

Dan told me: “It’s gratifying and satisfying. You get to know people personally.” As a police officer, it’s a unique experience: “once I get on a site, there’s a bunch of people I know. Some of the people I’ve arrested, and I see them making progress.”

The heart Sergeant Dan has for his community inspires me.

If you would like to become more involved in your community, like Sergeant Dan, volunteering is a great way to do that. We need 3 more people to volunteer as drivers. Maybe you could help us with that. If you’re interested, fill this out and we will contact you. We also need 2 more kitchen volunteers, so if you would like to help in the kitchen, fill this out.

Thank you for all you do to support us, may God bless you.

P.S.

If you can’t volunteer, but you still want to make an impact on your community, you can help us launch a rehab program called “Homeless to Healthy” by donating. Every donation to this rehab program is currently being doubled (because of a generous local family). So, your impact is twice as powerful. Click here for more info on that.

Got a whole lot of subject matter this month, folks. Let's start off with Kauai, our island neighbor to the south. Talk about a fantastic place !!! It was hot, but sooooo satisfying !!! I woke up every morning at 6:45am. Those that know me well might think I'm lying, but I swear it's true. It'd be 89 degrees by 8:30 am, and that's honestly the last time I'd check. Even the heat is different there - it's more.... Solar, I'd say. You can get a pretty decent sunburn in just 10 minutes if you aren't careful. We packed plenty of 100 SFP sunscreen though, so that wasn't too bad until you sweated all that sunscreen off...

My brother's wedding was perfect. It had the perfect background for them to take some pretty awesome pix. I video'd the whole wedding on my phone, so that was pretty cool, too. After the ceremony, they took off to do all the picture taking while several of us just kicked back in the shade. My daughter had even come, and she is awesome to kick it with. We had about an hour before we took a tour of the grounds and were dropped off at the Luau. It was a pretty big place, all perfectly manicured and gorgeous. They transported us all in these tram/train things and dropped us right at the eating hall. The food was pretty awesome, and then they announced that they would be a show. I got to see all the cool fire spinning stuff you see in the magazines. All in all, I'd have to say that September 8th of 2021 got a full 10 out of 10 - there may never again be a day so perfect in my life, and I'm more than okay with that...

So, while I was over there, we rented a 2020 convertible Mustang GT. The one with the 5 liter V8. What a car that was !!! I really wanted to see how fast it could really go, but there wasn't really anywhere I could take it to find out. Suffice it to say that it could go from 30mph to 97mph in like 5 or 6 seconds. It was so fun. At night when you unlocked the doors, it had a light feature in the bottom of the door that showed a galloping mustang. Wish I'd taken a pic of that, but nope, I totally forgot to...

I guess it goes without saying that the six days I was there just plain weren't enough. I had just gotten the hang of things when it was time to say Mahalo and come home. That's okay, though. There will be other vacations, albeit probably not as epic, for a while, but we're already setting our sights on Maui. They say it's more tourist-y than Kauai, but I'd still like to see it. Give me a year or two, and I'll tell y'all all about when I get back...

Lord, the beauty of Kauai was remarkable. You are an Awesome God. Thanks for helping me to keep my cool on the airplane both ways, and thank you for the incredible time I had soaking in all that beauty. Also thanks for keeping Vicky and myself safe throughout the whole adventure. I learned Your Hawaiian name while I was there, too - it is Kekoa. I'll never forget that. Thanks Lord, for showing me something different and unique.

See you on the streets. Mahalo.
