Highlights from the Truban Archives

This undated photograph shows football players at Massanutten Military Academy conducting practice or a scrimmage.

While the image is not labeled with a date or other information, it most likely was taken in the 1940s. This predates the existence of the current Gordon Bowman Stadium. Instead the practice was being held at the “Seibert Athletic Field,” a multi-purpose field on the west side of the academy’s campus. Today, this field is the site of a modern baseball field.

Massanutten Military Academy was founded in 1899 and has been an important part of our community since then. The Truban Archives is home to hundreds of images and items from and related to this school. Visit in person or online at archives.countylib.org to learn more.

October is consumer information month.  From The Harvard Business Review a consumer information tidbit.

Some of the most valuable skills that managers look for in employees are often difficult to define, let alone evaluate or quantify: self-discipline, self-awareness, creative problem-solving, empathy, learning agility, adaptiveness, flexibility, positivity, rational judgment, generosity, and kindness, among others. How can you tell if your future employees have these skills? And if your current team is lacking them, how do you teach them? Recent research in neuroscience suggests that you might look to the library for solutions; reading literary fiction helps people develop empathytheory of mind, and critical thinking.

Support the efforts of the Library Foundation with a contribution today. You can send your donation online, no need to use a stamp!
