What's New at BHPLA?

Fall 2021 Helena Hicks Emancipation School
October 24th, 11:30am: Honoring Baltimore’s living legend Helena Hicks, our fall lecture series features 40-minute presentations from the Johns Hopkins faculty. These lectures are digests of standing courses, manicured for our event. The mini-courses present key ideas, definitions, and debates in African American studies today. Registered participants of all three mini-courses will receive a certificate of completion from the JHU Helena Hicks Emancipation School. Register for the October 24th lecture

BHPLA Co-Sponsors Community Archives Workshop
October 8th, 1-4pm: The Billie Holiday Project co-hosted a Community Archives Workshop at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center for collectors of African American arts heritage. The event was held under the auspices of the JHU-University of Baltimore Community Archives Program, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Baltimore National Heritage Area Foundation. 


Announcing BHPLA Elder-In-Residence Charles Dugger
This year, Charles Dugger will be BHPLA's elder-in-residence. A long time Baltimore educator and civil rights advocate, we are excited to have Dugger join us as a wealth of knowledge for our community. Learn more abo

Neighborhood Oral History Project Launches at Jazz Concert
We invited elders from West Baltimore to share their stories from the civil rights era in Baltimore at our 3rd annual Billie Holiday Concert. The stories we collected will help us launch a larger project on the city's civil rights history.



Billie Holiday Project Welcomes New Fellows
We are excited to welcome a new cohort of arts and humanities fellows, who will help advance our work within the Baltimore community. BHPLA hosted an orientation for new fellows from August 23rd through August 25th. Find more about our fellowships as

BHPLA around town: The 2021 Billie Holiday Jazz at Lafayette Square was a great success. Hundreds of community members, faculty, and staff attended to hear live music, spoken word, and other performances. The third annual event on September 11th featured Grammy-nominated artist Maimouna Youssef and The Nasar Abadey Quartet. Speakers included: Councilman John Bullock (District 9), Storyteller Grandmother Edna, and BHPLA Artist in Residence Noah Silas. Read the full write up of the event from the JHU Newsletter here.
Upcoming Black Humanities Events at JHU
Book Talk: A Vatican City in the Middle of Baltimore: Living in the Shadow of the Ivory Tower
October 12th, 3:30pm. Join Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of Urban Studies and founding director of the Smart Cities Lab at Trinity College, Davarian L. Baldwin for a talk about his newest book. Discussions about In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower will explore how Hopkins as an institution can help us examine the much broader possibilities of urban engagement and the pitfalls of authoritarian control when universities shape the future of our cites.

The DNA of Achievers: A Conversation with Dr. Mathew Knowles
October 21st, 7pm: Join Peabody alumnus Paul Jan Zdunek in a conversation with Mathew Knowles for a business, motivational, and inspirational discussion. The conversation will focus on Dr. Knowles entrepreneurial success and identify traits that viewers could also embody.

Wisdom and Words and Traditions of Elders of Color
October 12th, 2pm: The Center for Black Equity Baltimore will host a workshop at the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care. Their discussion will focus on the idea surrounding the messages and lessons that need to be passed on to promote and build on our continued strengths and messages. For more information, click here.

An Evening with Nikki Giovanni
October 23rd, 5pm: Join Busboys and Poets Books for an evening with one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement, Nikki Giovanni. Influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement of the period, she later became dubbed the "Poet of the Black Revolution". Learn more about this event here.

The Lived Baltimore Experience-An Evening with Lea Gilmore
October 28th, 7pm: Join Lea Gilmore, a past winner of the Blues Foundation's "Keeping the Blues Alive" award and one of Essence Magazine's "25 Women Shaping the World" for a conversation and set of classical blues and soul music. Part of a year long virtual speaker series, it focuses on spotlighting Baltimore natives doing big things in the world. Get more information about this event here.

Maryland Emancipation Day-African-American History Walking Tour
October 30th, 1pm: Join Peerless Rockville and local historians, Ralph Buglass and Chiquita Sorrels for a walking tour of downtown Rockville's African-American sites in remembrance of Emancipation day. Learn more here.
