World Communion Sunday
We call them the words of institution…the words repeated at the Communion Table over the elements before they are distributed. “Take eat, this is my body… and drink from this all of you, this is my blood.” These words are actually found in Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth, 1 Corinthians 11: 17-26. Paul addresses some concerns he has over divisions in the church, especially when it comes to participating in the Lord’s Supper.
 
It’s a good passage to read together on World Communion Sunday, when Christians put aside any and all divisions to gather as one unified body of Christ at the Lord’s Table.  I invite you to come and participate in worship this Sunday, and to once again eat and drink the body and blood of Jesus, the unifying power of his broken body, to heal and restore our own brokenness.

“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’”  - Matthew 16:24-25
 
 
Our society tells us to “look out for number one.” In other words – it tells us that we are the most important and that we should put our needs and desires ahead of those of others. As our youth continue to look at the “Renegade Gospel” this month, we are going to focus on a contrary message that Jesus gives – that we deny ourselves and take up our cross to follow Christ. As Jesus tells his disciples that this is what it takes to follow him, he makes it clear, this is no easy task. His followers won’t be rewarded with worldly riches and pleasures. Instead, they will be asked to sacrifice of themselves so that they can live in obedience to God. It’s not exactly looking out for number one, is it?
 
As we dive into this passage and others this week, take some time to think about what God might be asking you to sacrifice to follow Christ more closely. Take some time to pray about what it is that God wants from you, and commit to doing that this week.

We’re running quickly into such a fun season with our kids! We have several events coming up and we’d love for you to attend! Children’s Ministry is decorating a trunk for trunk or treat. We will vote next Wednesday on the theme and get to work! Club 45 and middle school youth are going to Klausmeyer Pumpkin Patch during WOW on Wednesday October 27. If your child would like to attend, please email Caitlin at caitlino@woodlawnumc.net or stop by the Club 45 room for a permission slip. Parent volunteers are encouraged to attend!!

Job Opening
Woodlawn has an immediate opening for a part-time communications specialist. Hours are flexible, but a weekly deadline must be met. Anyone who enjoys working with digital communications such as video and social media is encouraged to apply. Those with experience in video production and editing are preferred but training is available. Interested applicants may send their resume and a letter of interest to Rev. Moment for Mission
World Communion Sunday
Today is one of the 6 special Sundays the global United Methodist Church celebrates. United Methodists celebrate on these specific days to unite and make clear the commitment of the church as the people of God, and to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to special programs approved and supported by the Church.
The World Communion Sunday offering supports racial and ethnic students in achieving their educational goals while also transforming communities. Fifty percent of the offering provides scholarships for graduate students from the U.S. and other countries. Thirty-five percent supports ethnic scholarships for undergraduate students. Fifteen percent funds in-service training programs for racial and ethnic persons. These funds are administered by the General Boards of Higher Education and Ministry and  Global Ministries. What you give today recognizes our call to reach out to all people and model the diversity of all God’s children. Thank you for what you give.

Help Required on Screens for Contemporary Worship
We need volunteers to be on rotation for screens for the contemporary worship service on Sundays. Volunteers would serve once a month. The position sits in the tech booth behind the computer and follows an order of worship/script that is provided. Training will be provided. 
Pastor Appreciation Day
Pastor Appreciation Day is coming up on Sunday, October 10. Cards may be left in the basket inside the church office.
Have you seen the new Woodlawn signs?
Matt Archer, Woodlawn’s Lay Leader and longtime member worked many hours over the past few weeks replacing each of our permanent wooden entrance signs with new panels. Matt contributed the materials and his time and talent to design and cut the panels, and then enlisted some help to finish and install them. Thank you Matt, for this “welcoming” contribution!

This is Us
Helen Fry, at the age of 88, is still doing mission work from her home at Brookdale Assisted Living here in Derby. Helen has faced several medical issues over the past year yet has kept up with her mission work. Helen crotchets mats made of plastic bags from local stores (Dillon's - brown bags, Dollar General - yellow bags, Wal-Mart and Target - white/blue & white/red bags). The mats are delivered for her to homeless people in the Wichita area. She has made about 50 of these mats which are used as a ground mat for sleeping, providing a dry and cushioned surface. What a blessing this has been for the recipients. What a great example of being the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus! Thank you, Helen.

Carol Wojcik Appreciation Day
Thank you to all who came to our celebration this past Sunday for Carol Wojcik! During service we shared a few stories, and then all were led to the foyer where we officially dedicated the painting on the nursery door to Carol for her 45 years of service to our children and families.
Carol says, "Thank you WUMC for doing this!! I feel so blessed to be a part of this church and able to care for all the wonderful children there for so many years. I thank God for this opportunity that brought me so much happiness."

Chapel Hill UMC invites you to join them for “Courageous Conversations”, four Zoom/Webinar conversations on challenging question.

Those attending the fall speaker series may take part in any or all sessions. There is no cost and no need to sign-up in advance. Oct. 10: “SCIENCE OR FAITH OR BOTH?”
Speaker: Dr. Se Kim, a scientist and pastor’s wife, is a national expert on the relationship between science and faith in Christianity.

Oct. 24: “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? WHY SHOULD I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN?”
Speaker: Rev. Dr. James Bryan Smith, author of several books including his bestselling, “The Good and Beautiful” series and “Embracing the Love of God.”

Nov. 14: “HOW CAN A GOOD AND LOVING GOD SEND PEOPLE TO HELL?”
Speaker: Rev. Adam Hamilton, Senior Pastor of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. Adam recently preached a series of sermons titled, “A Thinking Person’s Faith.” He will be speaking about what Heaven will be like, what Hell is.

Operation Saint Francis will host a Pet Pawlooza on Saturday October 23 from 10am-2pm in the church parking lot. It will include:

Trunk or Treat is back at Woodlawn, and we are excited!  To decorate a trunk and pass out candy to kids, sign up in the church office! Want to be involved but don't have any decorations for a trunk? We can help! Our children's ministry has decorations/props from past events that we would be happy to loan and which you can expand upon! Candy will be provided.

Mark your Calendar – WUMC Blood Drive, November 13
Right now, the American Red Cross has an emergency blood shortage. The Red Cross national blood inventory is the lowest it’s been at this time of year since 2015, with less than a day’s supply of certain blood types in recent weeks. The Red Cross is working around the clock to meet the blood needs of hospitals and patients – but can’t do it alone. They need your help!
 
Woodlawn will hold its next blood drive on November 13. We had 32 people signed up to give at the last drive. Thank you to those who gave. Let’s see if we can increase that number. Blood can be given every 28 days, up to 13 times/year. If you wish to help right now, you can do so and still be eligible to give at our next drive in November. Dean Oblander’s surgery went well. Doctors felt confident that they got all the cancer. The staff and nurses at the medical center were very caring and helpful to all of them. Dean was released from the hospital to go home, just in time to celebrate his birthday, Sept. 24! Please continue prayers for healing as Dean recuperates at home.
 
Our sincere condolences go out to Ruth Martin’s daughters, Lorraine, Chris and Jan and their families. Ruth, who turned 102 yrs. young in April this year, passed away at her home on Friday, Sept. 24. The funeral service for Ruth will be held this Friday, Oct. 1, 11:00am, at Woodlawn UMC. Please continue to keep Ruth’s family in your prayers of comfort.
 
Ruthanne Whitely asks prayers for former member and her friend’s son, Mike Alumbaugh, who will have his pace maker replaced this week in Kansas City. Please keep Mike and his family in your prayers.
 
Colene Read asks prayers for 3 food pantry volunteers who had surgery this week. Please lift prayers that surgeries go smoothly and for healing.
  • Tuesday, Sept 28:  Patti Greer had carpal tunnel surgery & Lori Kersting had rotator cuff surgery.
  • Wednesday, Sept 29:  Don French had knee replacement surgery.
 Diane Dixon asks your prayers for her dad, Al Ward. Al has been hospitalized since Friday with pneumonia (not covid-related). His pneumonia is resolving, but a few more issues are cropping up. Please lift prayers of healing for Al.
