HAH Peer Nominated Award Winners

The Healthcare Association of Hawaii is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2021 Peer-Nominated Awards.
These awards, along with the annual HAH Awards and Scholarship Gala, and the Hawaii Healthcare Heroes Awards, recognize the best healthcare professionals working in their fields. All of the awards and the Gala had been suspended last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the scholarships were still awarded.
While there is no Gala for a second year in a row, the Association is resuming the awards because of the importance of recognizing the hard work that Hawaii’s healthcare professionals have done as they battled the coronavirus while caring for patients.
Here are this year’s peer-nominated award recipients, who are nominated by their colleagues for outstanding work in their respective fields. Next week, we’ll announce the new group of Hawaii Healthcare Heroes, professionals who are nominated by members of the public for care rendered directly to themselves or a loved one.

Adventist Health Castle Partners with Bristol Hospice
|
|
|
|
Adventist Health Castle is partnering with Bristol Hospice to provide General Inpatient Care (GIP) for pain control and symptom management in an acute care setting.
Physicians, care managers and/or a palliative care team will work with Bristol Hospice and the patient’s family to determine if inpatient hospice is appropriate and approved. This program is a much-needed service for the community, as almost half of all deaths occur in the hospital.
In its release, Bristol stated, “As the nation faces higher acuity patient volumes, surges, and shortages of strained staff, this will be a key growing trend. Hospice will become more integrated in assisting hospitals and gently serving the community through the most challenging times of their lives.”
Bristol Hospice also provided pizza to the Adventist Health Castle staff this week to commemorate the new partnership.

Reminder: HAH Members Still Have Time to Sign Up with MCAG
|
|
|
|
HAH members have full access to a class action settlement recovery service provided by Managed Care Advisory Group (MCAG), and MCAG reminds those who have not yet signed up that some deadlines are approaching for some of the larger settlements.
MCAG has recovered over $200 million on behalf of healthcare organizations from previous settlements. MCAG partners with HAH members to file client’s claims into the Blue Cross Blue Shield Subscriber settlement and other class action settlements. MCAG charges HAH members a contingent fee of 25% of actual recoveries (no other fees) for all settlements.
The following are significant opportunities with claim filing deadlines that are approaching fast:
The BCBS Subscriber Settlement | $2.67 Billion | November 5, 2021 filing deadline
- This is a fund for employers who used the Blues for their own benefit plan. It reimburses a portion of premiums paid by eligible Fully Insured Groups back to 2008, or administrative fees paid by eligible Self-Funded Accounts back to 2015.
The EpiPen (Branded & Generic) Settlement | $345 Million | November 12, 2021 filing deadline
- Covers businesses with self-insured health plans that purchased EpiPens, both branded and generic, on behalf of their employees due to artificially inflated and/or stabilized prices. All organizations located within the United States with applicable purchases are eligible.
The Payment Card Interchange Fee settlement | $5.54 billion | TBD filing deadline
- This is also known as the Visa/Mastercard settlement, which reimburses organizations for the fees they paid for accepting Visa or Mastercard payments from Jan. 1, 2004 to Jan. 25, 2019. This class action settlement has received final approval and the claims process will be available as soon as appeals are resolved.
