Conservation News for Our Circle of Friends         September 2021

Fungi, like these Eyelash Cups, are crucial nutrient cyclers. Although fungi are widespread and numerous they often go unnoticed because of their small size—these Eyelash Cups are only a few millimetres wide. Growing in dark, damp places like the forest floor they decompose and recycle dead plants and animals making the nutrients available for new growth.

The 2022 Calendars Are Here!

You're invited to our Calendar Launch Saturday October 2, from 1:30 to 3 pm on the lawn at the Mountain View County office.
These gorgeous calendars are $20 each—the money raised from their sale goes towards our conservation and stewardship work.

Because of COVID restrictions, you must stay physically distanced. (Masks are a must if distancing isn't possible.) There is no bathroom access and no chairs. (You'll welcome to bring your own chair if you'd like to visit.)

The MVC offices are located at the intersection of Hwy 2A and Township Rd 320 (NW corner, enter off Road 320 aka Bergen Road).  Map and directions here

Calendars are also for sale at the Legacy office Monday to Friday during business hours (4801-49 Ave, Olds).
LegacyMountain View County
In 2013 a small group of far-sighted individuals, with encouragement and financial support from Mountain View County, established Legacy Land Trust Society. It became a registered nonprofit society in 2015.

MVC placed conservation easements on two of its properties—Jackson Lake in 2017 and Campbell Pit in 2020.

This week Legacy Board Chair Kim Good thanked MVC councillors and staff for their continued support and presented the County with framed photos of their easements.

We’re having a Virtual Birthday Party!

Legacy turns 8 on October 20th & we're inviting you to help us celebrate!

Throughout October we’ll post items from our Birthday Wish List on our Facebook and Instagram sites. You can choose to buy an item or donate towards its purchase.

In return you’ll receive a tax receipt for donations of $20 or more, a thank-you photo card featuring one of our conservation lands, and opportunities to discover some of the animals living on our conservation easements as we share footage from our new game cameras!

We'll let you know when the Wish List is posted to our website. If you see something you’d like to donate towards the purchase of (or buy the entire item!) please email Sarah at  legacylandstories@gmail.com to find out how.

P.S. Sarah was on the Advisory Committee that helped establish Legacy. Her birthday is October 21st, one day after Legacy's. Your donation to Legacy would really make her birthday great!

Conservation Update

Here we are already into fall—what a whirlwind summer we had!

Our three summer students are all back into their studies after a busy summer of picking weeds, watering trees and monitoring seven conservation easements, all while battling wasps and cow pies and having a generally great time. I’m sure they are missing it!

This summer we added 2 new conservation easements to our list of protected properties, conserving an additional 736 beautiful acres. We are so happy to partner with these landowners to bring their property visions to life. Watch for details on these properties coming to our website soon!

Through the fall and winter we will continue to work with the landowners of 7 additional properties to finalize their conservation easements within the next few months.

On September 15th, we submitted applications to the Alberta Land Trust Grant Program to fund 5 more amazing properties. We won’t hear about that funding until March of 2022 but are optimistic that we will be adding those properties to our list of projects for next year!
