Dear Families:

One of our goals for every year is to increase opportunities for meaningful participation in our school community amongst the parents/families of our students so that they understand and contribute to the structures and values of LMC. Throughout the year, we will provide you with many opportunities to learn about us and to hear from you, so we can also get to know you. Meet the Teacher Night is an opportunity for teachers and advisors to briefly connect with you and share who they are as educators. Although you will not meet us in person, we hope you leave the session feeling even more connected to the LMC community.

As a reminder, our Meet the Teacher Night event will be held on Thursday, September 30th, from 6:00-7:30 pm. On Monday, I will share Homeroom Zoom links with families for this meeting.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CORNER: How do we handle conflict at LMC?

LMC utilizes restorative justice at our school, and it can be very different from previous school experiences for students and families. Students learn about and participate in RJ during the school day. In hopes of bringing our new families into the fold and providing a review for our returning families, each week we will share information about RJ at LMC!

Week 2:  You may hear your child say that they were part of a “circle” in school. What does that mean?  Here are some key terms that may help you navigate restorative justice at LMC:

  1. Fairness Circle - When there is a harm at LMC, the participants in that harm and allies from the community gather in a circle to discuss what happened, why it happened, how to make sure it does not happen again, and how to restore our community.

  2. Ally - A child or adult who is asked to participate in a Fairness Circle as a support for the people involved in the harmful incident. The children involved in the incident choose who they want as their ally. This person does not have to know anything about the incident to participate.

  3. Talking Piece - A tool used to ensure equal participation in the circle discussion.  When you have the talking piece, it is your time to share.  If you do not want to participate in that moment, you can always pass.

  4. Circle Norms - Agreed upon by all participants at the beginning of the circle.  These are usually: (1) Respect the talking piece; (2) Remain present; (3) What’s said in the circle remains in the circle, what’s learned in the circle leaves with us; and (4) Speak your truth and let others speak their truths.

COVID-19 RELATED UPDATES:

  • Weekly testing- Starting Monday, September 27, the DOE will increase random COVID-19 testing in schools from biweekly to weekly.
  • Updated quarantine policy- Also starting Monday, September 27, in accordance with the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we will no longer close an entire classroom when there is a positive case in the classroom. This new policy applies to all students in any grade.
  • Health Screening- Before entering school buildings each day, every student and must complete the health screening form.
  • Covid Consent Forms- Submit your updated testing consent form for your child using your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) at schoolsaccount.nyc or by downloading the form online at schools.nyc.gov/covidtesting and providing the completed printed form to your child’s school.  Let's keep our LMC Community Safe!
