Abernethy Sub Administrator 9/27-10/5

Hello Abernethy Families,

Lisa Ditto, PPS Teacher On Special Assignment, will continue to be our sub Administrator for 9/27-10/5. Unfortunately, due to an urgent family emergency that still needs my attention, I will not be able to  return to campus until Wednesday, October 6, 2021.  Please know that I am not ill, but I do need to continue to be with my family at this difficult time.

Lisa has done an exceptional job supporting our teachers, Office, Counseling and Specialists team the past two week. She has helped to lead the ongoing work with refining our safety processes and plans for outdoor lunches, supporting teaching teams with implementation of our new schedule and curriculum, and working with students and families. Huge ATTA WAY, Lisa for all you have done for our school community helping make our return to school safe and successful for our students!!

Please contact the office if you have any questions or concerns at 503-916-6190. We want to know how to make your Back to School experience positive and safe for your family.

Transportation UPDATE

Parents, please note that students who ride the bus each day must be pre-arranged through the transportation department due to safety concerns. We are working to have assigned seats for contract tracing purposes. We are unable to have students ride the bus on a daily basis to ride home with their friends at this time similar to Hybrid last spring.

Please do not call the office and dismiss your child to ride the bus home with a peer. We will not be able to allow that at this time. Perhaps in the future we will be able to return to that way of dismissal if/when we do not have to do contract tracking, capacity concerns, or assigned seats. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this and the shortage of bus drivers.

New Chromebooks

Students in grades 3-5 will need to bring their old Chromebook to school on Wednesday, 10/6 so they can trade it for a new one! It is important that all students return their device to have a new one checked out to them on those days as our IT staff will be in the building for one day only.

COVID-19 Screening Program For All PPS Families UPDATES

Many families have questions about the roll out of the COVID-19 Screening Program. We are currently working with OHSU on the details and will provide families with more information as we finalize the details for the building. Please see the OHSU COVID-19 Screening Testing Webpage with FAQs www.ohsu.edu/k12testing. to help answer questions in the meantime.

In our continued effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our communities, Abernethy, will participate in a weekly COVID-19 Screening Testing Program, a partnership between the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and PPS. Screening testing provides early detection of COVID-19, even when individuals have no apparent COVID-19-like symptoms.

If you are interested in having your student(s) participate in this free weekly COVID-19 screening testing program, please be sure to return a signed copy of the opt-ins provided to your students at the end of last week or today.

To enroll, families need to fill out both the OHSU and OHA Opt-in Forms and turn them in (even if families have already turned the OHA form in for diagnostic testing if students become symptomatic at school).  If you do not want to Opt-In for OHSU, you will need to complete the OHA forms to have a test given at school if your child becomes symptomatic.

We recognize that families may have checked the screening testing box on the OHA form earlier this year, but we need to ensure that both forms are completed for enrollment in the OHSU Screening Testing program. Checking the box was not part of this process.

If I enroll my student in this testing program, what should I expect?

  1. Families who wish to participate in the testing program must fill out the consent forms and health authorization forms we sent with your student on 9/23/21.

  2. Our school will receive testing kits and labels to send home every Wednesday afternoon to be returned Thursday mornings.

  3. We ask that every Thursday morning, your student spit into the test tube to be return that morning too.  We encourage you to watch this 4 minute video on how easy it is to collect a spit sample.

  4. Please return the spit samples that same morning. Coolers will be located with two adults coming off the bus and at the morning office in our Gazebo. Samples will be collected by OHSU for transportation to the lab for testing after being safely stored in our Symptom Space for pick up each Thursday.

  5. OHSU will share the results within 48 hours of the specimen being dropped off at school. You will receive a secure email with your child's results. Please note: PPS will not receive the results of your student’s test.

If it is a positive (or inconclusive) result, we ask that you keep your student home from school. Please call us immediately and we will follow the guidance provided by our partners at the Multnomah Health Department.

We know that this is an important tool in our effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It’s also important to remember that despite the availability of this program, the best tools to protect individuals against COVID-19 are vaccination for those eligible, physical distancing, masks, proper ventilation and airflow, hand hygiene, and staying home if ill or exposed to someone with COVID-19.

We are excited for the launch of this screening testing program, helping us make more informed decisions about our students safety and health.

Safety Drills at Abernethy

On 9/16 at 9:45 Abernethy successfully practiced our first lockdown drill of the school year. We have had some questions about the procedures and practices of our drills for the school year. Please find more details and plans for our safety drills for the 2021-2022 school year below. Emergency Drills / School Emergency Response Plans (SERP)
Abernethy follows the School Emergency Response Plan addresses Portland Public Schools’ responsibilities in emergencies associated with natural disaster, human-caused emergencies, and technological incidents. It provides a framework for coordination of response and recovery efforts within the district in coordination and with the city of Portland, Multnomah County, and the state of Oregon. The Plan establishes an emergency organization to direct and control operations at the school site during a period of emergency by assigning responsibilities to specific personnel.

Purpose
The purpose of the School Emergency Response Plan is to protect the safety and welfare of PPS students, employees, visitors, and volunteers, and to ensure the preservation of public property.

Scope
The scope encompasses all PPS school sites and district facilities. It addresses a broad range of major emergencies. Such events include crimes committed on campus, hazardous materials emergencies, weather emergencies, and fire. Also included are procedures for emergencies that may or may not require the full or partial activation of the School Emergency Team (SET).

The objectives of the plan are to:
  • Protect the safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and volunteers.
  • Provide for a safe and coordinated response to emergencies.
  • Protect the school's facilities and properties.
  • Enable the school to restore normal conditions with minimal confusion in the shortest time possible.
Oregon Revised Statute 336.071

Emergency Drills and Instructions

PPS works hard to ensure that all staff and students are trained to respond effectively and efficiently during an emergency at or near school.  One of the many was we accomplish this is through our mandatory drill requirements for schools.  The following drills are conducted each school year:
  • Monthly Fire Drills
  • Two Earthquake Drills
  • Two Lockdown Drills
  • One Lockout Drill
  • One Team Response Drill
Whenever possible schools conduct drills in partnership with our first responders, police and fire.
