Hello,

Welcome to Sort of Nothing Like A Book Club, the newsletter from Creative CoLab.

This month Read A Book Day was celebrated. This annual day seeks to encourage us all to take a break and get reading.

Reading for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing, aids in building social connections and relationships with others and is associated with a range of factors that help increase the chances of social mobility (Reading Agency

Many of us get our first exposure to the vast world of books through our local libraries. For this edition I've been looking at libraries and the important role they play in our communities.

More than just a collection of books - The importance of libraries

Over on the blog I've been looking at the important role libraries play in our community. I look at how they are benefiting many sections of society, and how they are still relevant today in our digital age.

Libraries in Lockdown: Connecting communities in crisis
This report shows how libraries and their staff kept communities connected and supported the most vulnerable during the coronavirus lockdowns. It looks at their growth in digital offerings, redeployment of library buildings and staff, and their ongoing engagement with people at risk in their communities.

Neil Gaiman: Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming
This is a transcript of a wonderful lecture given by author Neil Gaiman about why he feels libraries and reading is so important. He explores why reading is such a positive thing and essential in our society to communicate, comprehend, exchange ideas and build empathy. He considers libraries as places of freedom- freedom to read, freedom of ideas, and freedom of communication.

‘Matilda’ Is A Reader’s Role Model
This article looks at the Roald Dahl character Matilda. It explores how this character shows us the power that can come from reading and a childhood love of books. It considers how in a world that still underestimates young girls, she is a role model in showing how strong girls can be.

Are Libraries Still Relevant? | Liz Bartlett
In this TED talk, librarian Liz Bartlett explores how libraries have transformed over the years and how they are still relevant to communities today. She discusses how libraries provide many services beyond books and references and how they are a space where everyone is welcome.
Although discussing the library system in the US, there are many parallels with libraries here in the UK.

The Reading Agency
The Reading Agency is an organisation that aims to encourage everyone to read and enjoy literature. They work with partners and libraries across the UK to deliver reading programmes including the Summer Reading Challenge for children, Reading Well and Quick Reads for adults.

And Lastly...

Libraries are wonderful spaces to discover new interests, passions and a good book. Now that we are opening up, why not take a look at what your local library has to offer, you might discover more than just your next read.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share about what we've touched upon in this issue (or a good book recommendation) we'd love for you to get in touch.
Bye!
