Dear Friends of African Hope,

Good news is always nice to share... African Hope has opened its doors for all our existing students to return to school.  On 23rd August we saw over 350 students returning.  No more split classes and days - we have gone back to our normal schedule of 5 days per week, with kindergarten up to Grade 4 meeting each day from 7:15 am until 12:15 pm, and then Grade 5 up to Grade 8 (with two additional kindergarten classes) meeting each afternoon from 1:15 until 6:00 pm.

Wearing masks all day is a challenge but we continue to
make great efforts to keep everyone safe
Many thanks to our donors for enabling us to
continue providing the children access to a quality and principled education, and a hot nutritious meal each day.
STAFF
We are thankful to God, that He continues to provide.  We have a great team of teachers and staff. This year we were sad to say goodbye to several dear staff members as they left this country to immigrate to the West, and as others moved on to other destinations.  But, we are blessed to welcome seven new teachers joining us for this new academic school year.  Each person brings a new dynamic, with their unique and varied talents.

VOLUNTEERS
Last year we missed the valuable contributions that volunteers bring with them to African Hope.  With the restrictions caused by the pandemic we had to cancel our regular volunteer programs.

Thankfully, this is a new school year and we have some new and old faithful volunteers joining us in our Guided Reading program which started up this month.  After a year of not being able to provide this much needed and appreciated reading program we are so happy to offer the opportunity once again for students to read one-on-one with volunteers and improve their English and reading comprehension skills.  The students love this time so much that they often ask their teachers if we can come read with them every day.

One of our long standing volunteers is very keen.  She comes to spend an hour reading with students before heading off to her full time job.  She tells us that her colleagues can always tell if she's been at African Hope before work, because she arrives at her workplace with a glow on her face.  How special!!!
Introducing Frances . . .
I am a volunteer at African Hope Learning Center. This journey God has brought me on has been amazing, exciting and terrifying at times. My story begins from last year, 2020. I came to Egypt for the first time and stayed during Covid-19 - for 9 months. My friend and I volunteered to help paint African Hope. I wanted so much to see the faces of the students when they came back to their freshly painted school. I was more excited about this thought, than painting the school. It was such a beautiful blessing to do something for the teachers and students here.

When I went back home after 9 months, I thought God was sending me next to Mexico to volunteer at an orphanage in Juarez.  I started to raise funds to go to Mexico, where I thought God was sending me. Nothing seemed to be working; the little money I raised, I ended up spending for my expenses. I prayed and asked God, “Lord, what am I doing wrong? Am I not in your will?” As I prayed, Egypt came to mind, so I thought, okay, pray for Egypt. Then, African Hope came to mind.  Ok, pray for African Hope. After a few days, I could not stop thinking about African Hope, so I contacted Bev, the Volunteer Coordinator at African Hope, and asked her what she needed me to pray for. She said they were praying for a volunteer to fill a need in the finance office.  I realized right then what God was trying to tell me. I said to Bev, I am an accountant and I think God wants me to come back to Egypt to volunteer in the school finance department – for one year. As soon as I agreed to come back to Egypt, God started blessing me with donations to be able to return to Egypt. It is a beautiful thing when God puts everything in perspective for you and you begin to understand His purpose in your life.

I thank God for African Hope, the directors, the teachers who put their all into helping students understand the curriculum, and the students who work hard at learning the curriculum. God has richly blessed me while I have been here in Egypt and He will continue to bless me as I walk in His Will. I see the students flourishing; last year all except one of our 8th grade students who wrote passed their Sudanese Certificate exams, which are eight exams in total (see pictures of graduating class below). We are so proud of the teachers who worked hard to help the students pass their exams and the students who put all their efforts and knowledge into passing their exams. Most of all, we praise God for helping our students remember what they learned.
A BIG Round of Applause to our 35 graduating students

We are proud of this group of grade 8 students who worked hard throughout the year and will now move on to their senior level. Most of us, as staff, have watched them grow up here, arriving so shy and little and now leaving with a bounce in their step!

Special thanks go to their teachers who have certainly gone the extra mile to encourage and support their students, bringing out the best in each one of them.
We want to extend our thanks to each and every one of you, our friends, partners, volunteers and donors. Your participation here is invaluable.

We are thankful for your partnership as we together invest in the lives of students, bringing HOPE to this wonderful community we serve at African Hope Learning Centre.  Your efforts of time, encouragement, financial support and prayers make a huge difference in students' lives.

With grateful hearts,
The AHLC Team

Our Prayer for you and for the community we serve

We pray that our Loving Father God will take the lives of each one of us
into His keeping, guide our thoughts and feelings, direct all our energy,
instruct our minds, sustain our will, take our hands and give us skill to serve
one another, take our feet and make them quick to do whatever you ask of us,
take our eyes and keep them fixed on your everlasting beauty,
take our mouths and give us the words to tell others of your love.
Oh God, fill this day with your peace and joy.
Cover us all with your protection from sickness or any evil.   AMEN.
