After the recent horrific events in Afghanistan, the situation in Lesvos is no longer the focus of international media, despite the fact that many of our camp residents are Afghans who continue to need urgent support.  All of our current projects aim to assist and empower the Afghan diaspora in the camp on a long-term basis, and to show solidarity with all people standing up against the rule of the Taliban.

EDUCATION

The Taliban's refusal to educate women and girls makes Moria Academia's work all the more vital. In our classrooms, all residents are able to attend lessons in enriching subjects such as languages, music, IT and crafts. This work is self-organised - run by refugees, for refugees. It gives people at the camp a safe space to express themselves and equips them with the tools they need to defend the rights of their communities.

ENVIRONMENT

Care for the environment is an integral part of the Free Afghanistan movement. Every day, camp residents recycle around 15, 000 plastic bottles in exchange for essential supplies, and they clean other nearby areas on a weekly basis. This allows refugees not only to live in a clean space, but also develop positive relationships with their neighbours, both within and outside of the camp. By caring for their surroundings, camp residents are developing a support network that cares for them in turn. This is the beauty of empowerment through sustainability.

"Many times people are astonished why we, young Afghans are so determined to help protecting environment. This is maybe because in Europe people don't know that in the Free Afghanistan that is now silenced there was a movement for Environment. We feel climate change a lot and our future is very dark if we not do something against it very soon. So wherever we are we feel is our duty to do whatever we can to keep environment and fight climate change."

PROJECT UPDATES
VOLLEYBALL FOR WOMEN

Towards the end of this month we started a new women's volleyball programme in cooperation with Moria Corona Awareness Team. By playing sport in a safe and supportive space, female refugees are able to build strength, confidence and friendships.

Our logistics team are doing a fantastic job bringing supplies into the camp. Items distributed include: pallets for the new Moria White Helmets workshop; bags of clothes delivered to residents via Moria Corona Awareness Team; stationery for Moria Academia classes and food for the team members.
Thank you!
Our partners and donors have pulled together wonderfully in this turbulent time.
We'd like to give a special thank you to The Hope Project, who have played a huge role in distributing 3462 bags of clothing to camp residents.
Thank you also to REAL, who are doing an amazing job in helping us to update our curriculum and train our teachers.
Finally, a big thank you to Solingen hilft e. V, Ein Herz fuer Moria and Solidaritaet International for their continuous support for our education projects.
