Welcoming New Faces & Learning as a Team!

With the new school year starting, we recently welcomed three new 2021-2022 Fellows, María, Pilar and Eloïse. Our fourth fellow for this year, Téilo, rejoins us following an internship earlier in 2021.

As part of our orientation program, María, Pilar and Eloïse, worked in pairs with the teaching team to research and develop skills and teaching techniques they would like to implement more in our classrooms.

Each team presented their research and strategies during our first Professional Development Workshop of the academic year. María and Mayra worked on building phonemic awareness, while Pilar and Yohanna worked on structured play techniques, and Eloïse and Johnny worked on socio-emotional skills. This activity allowed the new fellows to dive into Yspaniola's work and get to know the local team.

Food Program Update with Toututa

As the school year kicks off, we sat down with María, known affectionately as "Toututa", our Food Program Coordinator, to talk about how it's going.

Toututa is really happy and proud: she can now serve her home-cooked meals every day and make sure the children are fed with healthy food. On the menu, we have egg sandwiches, peanut butter on toast, oatmeal with raisins, yogurts, rice pudding, and a wheat flour-based traditional Dominican porridge, enriched with iron and vitamins.

Toututa says: ''the program changed a lot since last year, but I really enjoy cooking for the children. My favourite recipe to cook is traditional Dominican porridge and I think the students also love it!''

It is thanks to Yspaniola's donors support of our recent Healthy Lunchboxes for our Preschoolers fundraiser that we have been able to return to home-cooked food this year, having provided pre-packaged snacks last year due to COVID-19.

There is still time to donate to our Food Program fund! We need to raise $1,350 to hit our goal of $2,500. This will help us to provide healthy snacks beyond our Kinder class, as we work to enroll students aged five and six this week. Please consider making a gift to help us closer to our goal- thank you!
