Hello Members and Friends!
Welcome to our October 2021 update.
Most memberships expired on September 30th
The SHoWLE Board changed the terms of membership in order to help us in maintaining our database of members. All yearly memberships expire on September 30th to match the end of our fiscal year. If you recently joined or renewed (in August or this month), your expiration will be 9-30-2022.
You may have received a note or two about your membership expiring. Don't worry too much about the automatic emails the system sends out. During this transition time we can adjust memberships manually. If that happens you will get an email about that as well.
If you haven't renewed yet, go to our join page and choose either the individual membership or the one for your Household.
We have moved to a different membership database application that is integrated with our website. Once you choose what membership to purchase then the process has you entering your payment information and your contact information such as mailing address and phone number. We really would like your mailing address and phone number so we can contact you outside of email should we need or want to do that. We also use the mailing address to plot our members on a map to help us choose where to locate our meetings.
You will also have the option to opt-in into two questions which include allowing your contact information to be used in a future member's only directory and asking if you don't mind us sharing your information with the American Humanist Association as part of our obligation as a chapter. The third question asks if you are currently a member of the AHA. That question is used for census purposes.
We will never share or sell your contact information beyond what our obligation is as an AHA chapter.
If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please reach out to us using the contact form on the website or emailing President Doug (president@humanistswle.org) or call him directly at 567-215-2694
Doug created a video explaining the process: New SHoWLE Member Onboarding
Member's meeting October 22nd
This note is to formerly notify you that our annual members meeting will take place on October 22nd at 7 PM online. Invites to the online room will be sent a day or two before the meeting.
One of the main functions of the members meeting is to elect our Board of Directors for the coming fiscal year. SHoWLE is authorized to have 7 Board members and this year 5 seats are open for election. Of the four current Board members whose terms are expiring this year, Shawn, TK, and Mylinda have decided not to stand for reelection. We thank them for their service this year.
The only requirement to serve on the Board is to be a voting member - those who pay dues. Board members can also spend extra time and in some cases donate to help the group but neither are required to serve.
If you would be interested in serving on the Board then please read over the Bylaws and fill out the form at this link: Board Interest Form
SHoWLE Bylaws
Nominations (and you can nominate yourself) are due by 5 PM on October 10th.
Another part of the members meeting is to make changes to the SHoWLE Bylaws. Submit any suggested changes to me, in writing, by 5 PM October 10th.
Finally, I will give a presentation about the concluded 2020-2021 Fiscal Year and any thoughts and plans for 2022.
I hope you can join us but if not please make sure you vote in the election when that material arrives after October 10th.
Website Form Problem
While working on moving to the new database system noted above, we discovered that some forms were not being sent out from the website. We think our webhost was blocking mail sending from the website since our email is handled through Google Workspaces and not the host.
We have added a plugin that uses an outside service to send emails from the website bypassing the webhost.
If you used one of our forms in the past few months and never got a response please let Doug know. We are sorry for the oversight.
Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021 pass the US House
There is a bill in the US Congress called “Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021” introduced by Rep. Judy Chu that would finally codify the Roe v Wade decision. The law would "protect a person’s ability to determine whether to continue or end a pregnancy, and to protect a health care provider’s ability to provide abortion services" and would invalidate laws like Texas' and the burdensome regulations like we have here in Ohio.
The bill passed the House and now moves onto the Senate.
We highly recommend you contact your Senators and demand that H. R. 3755 be passed immediately.

Donation Opportunity
One of the things that we would like to do is transition our membership database into our group website. This would allow us to create a member portal you could use to renew your membership, get reminders by email, be invited to members only meetings and events, and be able to update your contact information when you need to it.
One of the tools we would like to use is Paid Membership Pro. It is a plugin to use with our group website WordPress install. We setup and tested the free version but the items we really need aren't available unless you pay for the "Pro" version. For example, the free version only allows Stripe to be used as a payment gateway and we would like to be able to use PayPal etc.... The free version doesn't allow the admin to add members to the database manually. The Pro version also allows more customizations than the free version. We might also be able to setup a member's directory that is limited to being viewed by members only.
This is where you come in....
If five members or friends donate $60, SHoWLE can purchase a 1 year license for the "Pro" version of the plugin. If you can help us out, donate using the following link and in the note area mention it is for the membership database.

In this episode, we take a look at our history through two individuals who expressed a humanist outlook even if they weren't humanists as we think of today. Albert Sabin and Pauline Steinem came from poor backgrounds to accomplish renown in their time. We also look at some news for the group.
