Mission Statement

Our aim at DigitalFUTURES is to democratize architectural education by making the best educational ideas available for free to architects and students across the globe, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, age or economic standing. Education, we believe, should be a human right, and not a privilege of the wealthy.

October Newsletter

As we head into October, DigitalFUTURES is shifting its emphasis slightly in terms of its vision for a digitally empowered future of architectural education. The huge success of our first Saturday technical tutorial on Rhino, taught by Ahmed Hassab, has prompted us to introduce more technical tutorials to increase our understanding of computational design, digital fabrication, AR/VR and Robotic manufacturing of our built environments.

For October we are delighted to announce two follow-up tutorials, one on VQGAN + Clip and one on Paneling Tools, both of which should prove to be very popular. All technical tutorials will be recorded as a resource for future students and posted on our Youtube and BiliBili channels.

Also, following on from the success of our New Hybridities session on young Chinese designers, we are planning a similar one on young Indian designers. In fact, October has a distinctly Indian flavour to it, with a second session on emerging Indian talent.

Also added this month is a continuation of our Architecture and Philosophy series as part of the Doctoral Consortium initiative. The principle behind the Doctoral Consortium initiative is that it no longer makes sense to have individual professors in individual classrooms teaching individual groups of students when we can now share a single global platform with students worldwide. These Doctoral Consortium events will take place on Sundays, and represent an expansion of our platform. We are also including additional Chinese language sessions at an earlier time on Saturdays, and eventually plan to incorporate other sessions in other languages, including Arabic, Farsi and Spanish, as an extension of our InclusiveFUTURES initiative for inclusivity.

Upcoming Events

All events will be live-streamed on Youtube and BiliBili.

DigitalFUTURES Tutorial: Creative AI Text to Image with VQGAN+CLIP

2 October at 10:00am EDT / 4:00pm CET / 10:00pm China

This workshop offers an introduction to one of the most exciting recent developments in AI image generation. The workshop will explain how to use VQGAN+CLIP for text to image generation, a technique that is beginning to attract a substantial following. Participants will learn about multimodal AI models for creative design exploration and how to integrate them into an architecture design workflow.

The Learning Objectives:

- Have an overview of state of the art multimodal AI models for creative exploration

- Gain hands on experience of creating AI artwork using Google Colab

- Provide insights of different AI models that could be integrated in Design workflow

DigitalFUTURES Tutorial: Introduction to PanelingTools for Rhino

16 October at 10:00am EDT / 4:00pm CET / 10:00pm China

PanelingTools software is widely used to rationalize freeform surfaces and create paneling solutions from concept to fabrication. PanelingTools' intuitive and parametric capabilities made it popular across many sectors of the design industry, such as jewelry, consumer products, film, and the building industry. Its versatility and seamless integration with leading 3D modeling and parametric design tools made it popular worldwide in academia and practice.

This introductory session will focus on generating paneling concepts showing the flexibility PanelingTools offers to explore a variety of pattern options in terms of scale, composition and variation. The session will introduce the paneling workflow and pattern generation and manipulation using the Rhino modeling environment.

The Learning Objectives:

- Gain general understanding of the PanelingTools workflow and capabilities.

- Ability to generate patterns

- Skills to manipulate design using Rhino modeling environment

DigitalFUTURES Talk: In search for an Architectural Identity: Reflections by Emerging Hybrid Indian Practices

30 October at 10:00am EDT / 4:00pm CET / 10:00pm China

India is on course to be the third-largest economy by 2025. The World Bank estimates that approximately 40% of Indians will be moving into urban areas in the next decade. This unprecedented growth creates immense opportunities for India's Urban Future. The country's growth has been further fuelled by world-class digital infrastructure and cutting-edge information technologies, empowering 1.3 billion Indians. Several challenges face India's potential trajectory for sustainable and holistic growth, not limited to climate change. Urban spaces for the future will need to be looked at through a creative lens urging a paradigm shift in the design and delivery of sustainable built environments. This is the opportune time for architects & designers working within the Indian context to re-boot existing post-independence architectural/urban paradigms to lead the foray into unexplored  terrain to rewrite India's Digital Future.

Presentations by: Shreyas More, Anokhi Shah, Ayaz Basrai, Prasad Shetty & Rupali Gupte, Dhruv Jani
