Message from the National President
If Facebook posts are anything to go by, there is a lot of Club activity this fall and some meetings are actually taking place in-person! As Clubs begin to meet after the summer hiatus, some questions are being asked about the decisions we have made around financial support for GWI (the opt-in/out option) and the bylaw changes that were made at the AGM in June. Currently, we are working on a protocol for Policy Meetings and we will share that as soon as it is available.

I would like to clarify something that I said in the last Club Action News about the payment of dues at clubs where a member is a primary member or where a member is a dual member. This is the first time that we have separated CFUW dues from GWI dues. Previously, when a club collected the dues for CFUW National, they submitted $76 per capita of which $54.30 was allocated for CFUW and the additional amount was to pay GWI expenses. At the AGM this past June, we passed a motion to make CFUW National dues $55 and to have a formula for the calculation of the GWI dues. Going forward, all Clubs collect $55 for National and opt-in Clubs also collect an amount to pay the GWI dues. Dues should be seen as being comprised of 2-3 components:
  • Club dues:  The amount retained by clubs to fund club activities
  • CFUW dues:  $55 for dues owing May 1, 2022
  • GWI dues:  $30.10 for dues owing January 1, 2022 (based on 21.5 CHF at an exchange rate of 1.4)
Therefore, a member can pay her CFUW dues in her primary club and her GWI dues in another club that has agreed to forward her GWI dues to CFUW. Click here for a more detailed explanation & examples.

The past eighteen months has shown us that social distancing does not have to mean social isolation.  Clubs have been sharing events and speakers and joining cross- Canada meetings. If your Club has something to share, an event or a speaker, please don’t hesitate to send details to Brittany or Charlotte at the National Office and we will include them in Club Action Newsletter.

Take care and keep safe and I hope before my presidency term is up, I will actually get to meet a few more of you in person.

Resources for Orange Shirt Day/National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Thursday, September 30th, 2021
September 30, Orange Shirt Day and now the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honours the victims and survivors of residential schools** and their families and encourages us to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. For CFUW, reconciliation means recognizing past and ongoing discrimination and dispossession experienced by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and supporting Indigenous Peoples' rights through calls to action, research, and learning projects. Below is a list of resources, events, films, and other ideas for clubs or individuals to take action toward reconciliation — some are a single act or event that are time-sensitive, others are ongoing & long-term commitments with no time limit.  **If you have been affected by the residential school system and need help, you can contact the 24-hour Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.

CFUW is offering a series of free pay equity virtual workshops targeted at students and college/university personnel. The series, Raising Awareness and Empowering Women through Pay Equity” will run from October 2021 - March 2022 and seeks to provide diverse women with the tools to advocate for pay equity and engage in salary negotiation in order to address the gender wage gap.

The three-series workshops include:
  1. Pay Equity ‘ hands-on’ Salary Negotiation: This workshop is geared toward graduating college and university students and offers practical tools to help young women identify their transferable skills, bolster their resumes and learn evidence-based negotiation strategies.
  2. ‘Train the Trainers’: Participants are trained as facilitators to effectively deliver the Pay Equity Salary Negotiation Workshop for future utilization.
  3. Pay Equity Advocacy Campaign: This workshop focuses on how to raise public awareness about the pay gaps in Canada, how to mount a campaign, and how participants can become pay equity leaders in their community.

Each workshop is approximately 3-hours in length and will be conducted over Zoom. There is no cost to participate in the workshops, as CFUW has received a grant from Employment and Social Development Canada. All workshop materials are available in English and French.

To register, participants are invited to click here.

The Petition in Support of Afghan Women: an Example of International Collaboration
by Dorothy Phillips and Hally Siddons, CFUW-Ottawa
"As illustrated by our GWI Webinar in April and long before, many GWI members around the world have a deep interest in the perilous situation for women in Afghanistan. As the situation grew even more serious in the months that followed, NFAs worked in their own countries to do what they could. GWI then shared a letter of concern with all members in mid-August "to have Afghan women ’s voices heard in the global space.” The Taliban had taken control of their country. We knew that women and girls had been denied access to education during the Taliban rule two decades earlier and, in the 20 years of relative peace, had shown themselves to be passionate about their own education, and indeed their human rights. Was there anything we could do to support these brave women?" Click here to continue reading the full article by Dorothy Phillips and Hally Siddons!

  • Ontario LTC: On October 4, protests for improved standards of long-term care will take place across the province. Click here to learn more about actions & attendance requirements in your area.
  • Climate solutions: Transportation is currently a significant factor of climate change, and bicycle infrastructure can be a healthy solution. Especially in the cities, bicycle use is increasing as people seek cheaper forms of transit. The health of the riders and the city’s air improves, and emissions are lowered as less fossil fuel driven transportation is used. Infrastructure to ensure safety and accessibility of bicycle transport is crucial to keep and increase ridership. Click to learn more!
