In the face of hate, TAAF refuses to sit idly

Our community deserves more than thoughts and prayers. It’s time for all 23 million of us to be heard. To protect our communities, TAAF is making a first-of-its-kind, multi-million dollar investment to reimagine what our country can look like when we work together to end the cycle of hate and create a bold vision for belonging.

That’s why today we are launching the TAAF Anti-Hate National Network, coordinating a diverse set of organizations working to combat anti-AAPI hate together. TAAF’s Anti-Hate National Network and AAPI Action Centers are a new model for tackling hate nationally and locally.

At the national level, in addition to our inaugural anti-hate grants, TAAF is activating every aspect of the AAPI community: from addressing bullying in the K-12 school system to engaging interfaith leaders and journalists to protecting our elders. This type of coordinated effort has never been done before in our communities. Our Anti-Hate National Network includes: Act to Change, Asian American Journalists Association, Interfaith Youth Core, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), RISE Together Fund, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), and Sikh Coalition. TAAF is also unveiling its AAPI Emergency Relief Fund in partnership with GoFundMe to drive the quick deployment of resources to victims of anti-AAPI hate and violence.

At the local level, the Chicago AAPI Action Center, led by the Chinese American Service League, is establishing a citywide safety and victim recovery services network for local AAPI communities. The New York City AAPI Action Center, led by the Asian American Federation, is protecting the most vulnerable populations through ambassador services and upstander training. And, the Oakland AAPI Action Center, led by Asian Health Services, is reimagining public safety through community level interventions and survivor support.

Yet responding to hate incidents is not enough. AAPIs will only be safe from hate when our belonging is ensured. That is why this Thursday, September 30 at 2 pm ET, TAAF will co-host a virtual event with NextShark: “From Hate to Hope - Building a National Network for Belonging.” We hope you will join us and RSVP.

We plan to unleash the resources and tools necessary to take on the crisis of hate and create a broader sense of belonging — we’re just getting started.

Sincerely,
Sonal Shah
President, The Asian American Foundation
