Sunday Service Follow-Up

October 3, 2021

Thank you for joining us today! Below are questions for you to consider related to today's message "An Old Commandment" from 1 John 2:7-14 and John 13:34-35. We'd love to hear your feedback about how our service is going!

Questions:
  1. Read 1 John 2:7-14 and John 13:34-35.
  2. What do you think is the old, new commandment that John is writing about?
  3. Why do you think Jesus calls this a ‘new commandment’? Note: He is connecting it with his love for them.
  4. In verse 8 John writes, "...it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you." What is true in him and in you? Why is this an amazing truth?
  5. In verses 9-11 John shares a number of characteristics of a person in whom, "the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining." Who are these people and what are they like? What tests or measures does John give for considering who is  "in the light" and who is "in the darkness"?
  6. In verses 12-14 John refers to three groups of people in three stages of the Christian life. Who are they? What does he say about each of these groups?
  7. Do you believe what John writes about these people is true of all Christians? Why or why not? If these things are true for you, what are the implications for you?
  8. What difference would it make in your life if you were to deeply believe these truths and live your life in light of them?
  9. Take some time to pray and ask the Lord to help you and others to live in the truth of who you/they are, and whose you/they are!
