Hatch Statement on Supreme Court DACA Decision

Washington DC—Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Senator Orrin G. Hatch and Hatch Foundation Executive Director Matt Sandgren issued the following statements:

“Today’s decision only underscores the need for a long-term legislative fix for America’s Dreamers," said Hatch. "Many of these men and women have been on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19 and have contributed to our economy in invaluable ways. They have helped build the America we know today and deserve a seat at the table. Their fate should not have to be relitigated every few years. It is the role of Congress—not the courts or the administration—to resolve this issue. That’s why I call on my former colleagues to move quickly on bipartisan legislation that provides legal status for America’s Dreamers. It’s the right thing to do.”

“It’s time for the legislative branch to take leadership on this issue,” said Sandgren. “A problem so complex can be solved only through congressional action—not by court edict or executive fiat. Dreamers are a tremendous boon to our economy, with each worker adding more than $100,000 to our GDP every year. We need them today more than ever before, which is why Congress must act urgently to provide legal status for the more than 700,000 men and women affected by the court’s decision.”

Senator Hatch was one of the original sponsors of the DREAM Act while serving as a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Matt Sandgren served as the Senator’s senior Judiciary Committee counsel and helped negotiate legislation to address the plight of America’s Dreamers. Sandgren recently published an op-ed in The Hill highlighting the contributions of Dreamers to public health and the economy.
