What's New With Us

Well, September saw us finish off our regular summer stay at Thunderbird RV Park in Campbell River. After Labor Day we decided to get back on the road again and explore the parks around Vancouver Island as the camping shoulder season began.

After Labor Day the crowds dissipate somewhat making it easier to get reservations or first come first serve campsites. I find fall camping is quite enjoyable with the leaves changing and the air more clear and crisp. Great for hiking and sitting by the fire. Though more rainy days are the norm.

So far we have enjoyed stays at several beautiful forested Provincial parks and one amazing National Park. Click the image below for Google Map view
We started with 8 days out at Buttle Lake Campground in Strathcona Park, then 4 down at Rathtrevor Beach Park near Parksville. Last week saw us out at Pacific Rim National Park for a 5-day stint. We are now back on the east side of the Island at Miracle Beach. Awesome to get back out camping again!
Camping off-grid has helped me real-world test a pair of items that I have been reviewing. You'll find new videos for the Lion Energy Safari ME power station and an interesting battery-powered fridge/freezer from ACOPOWER. Furthermore, with all the towing I was able to test out a new TPMS from Guta. Finally, I tested how well my Starlink internet dish performed in the forest.

Are We Going South This Winter?

The answer is basically I don't know. I've been getting this question a lot lately from mostly my American friends unaware that the northern land border is still closed to Canadian travelers.

Canada opened up its land border to USA citizens for non-essential travels on Aug 9th. I've noticed quite a few US tourists and RVers on the Island now. But unfortunately, the USA hasn't reciprocated and continued to keep its land border closed to us.

Some Canadian snowbirds use a loophole where they fly to the USA (funny enough, this has always been allowed), then have their RV commercially transported across the border and reunite with it stateside.

Personally, for me, I'd rather not use the loophole. If the USA doesn't want us crossing, that's fine, no biggy. We are now well set up for wintering on Vancouver Island. But I know some people have more pressing needs with family or property down south or can't cope with the cold weather due to health reasons.

So there you have it, we are waiting to see what the Biden administration decides to do. The next border update is scheduled for October 21st, but things could change anytime.
