Management Sciences for Health Wins Prestigious Supply Chain Innovation Award

We are proud to announce that last week MSH took first place in the 2021 Supply Chain Innovation Awards for our work in Ukraine under the PEPFAR-funded USAID Safe, Affordable, and Effective Medicines for Ukrainians (SAFEMed) Activity.

Our winning entry, titled, “Ukraine: Tapping a Private Fleet to Get Medicines to the Last Mile,” explained how MSH engaged a private pharmaceutical logistics company, Farmasoft, for last-mile distribution of HIV and TB medicines. The approach aimed to streamline fragmented public-sector logistics services while following supply chain best practices and improving patient outcomes.

Watch our colleagues Sergey Strashuk, Senior Technical Advisor Procurement and Supply Chain at SAFEMed/MSH, and Vita Nosulenko, Business Development at Farmasoft, as they describe our pilot’s evolution, pioneering methods, promising results, and lessons learned, along with recommendations for national scale-up.

Following the success of the pilot, Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and the Center for Public Health, together with SAFEMed, expanded the activity to cover the entire country, adding Hepatitis C and B to the list of medicines slated for deliveries.

“We are delighted with this news and thank the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals for the recognition,” said MSH President and CEO Marian W. Wentworth. “This award is a testament to the hard work and creativity from our Ukrainian colleagues; the strong partnerships we’ve established with the national government, USAID, and the private sector; and overall a great example of how we can solve supply chain challenges working creatively and collaboratively. We are proud to continue our global legacy of supply chain innovations and we look forward to many more.”

The award, which recognizes demonstrated excellence, innovation, and return on investment for a significant supply chain challenge, was given by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. This year, the competition received more than 50 case study submissions.
