New Postdoctoral Researcher Myhunghee Lee
 joins the NIAS Team 

Myunghee Lee received her Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Missouri and is the recipient of the 2020 David M. Wood Excellence in Political Science Research Award. She joined the NIAS family this month and we asked her about how she experienced her time at NIAS so far. 

Myunghee explains: "I am more than excited to join NIAS as the Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow. It has been about two weeks since I officially started and I am already very impressed by the welcoming, warm atmosphere here. Glad to meet and work with these kind, friendly, and smart people at NIAS. During my appointment, I will conduct research on authoritarian education and post-democratization citizen behaviour in South Korea and Poland. In the project, I will compare how anti-communist and communist education create different post-democratization citizenships."

NIAS' Researchers participate at NYCAS 2021 

NIAS Researchers Duncan McCargo, Petra Desatova and Terese Gagnon are participating at this years' New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS) where they will present their latest research. 

Chaired by Postdoctoral Fellow Petra Desatova, Duncan McCargo, Director of NIAS, will present his paper on story completion exercises to research contentions politics in Thailand on Friday, October 1st at 5:00-6.30PM (CET). 

Terese Gagnon presents her research on severing seed sovereignty in Mae La refugee camp in Thailand on a panel on Racial and National Identity on Saturday, October 2nd, 09:00AM - 10.30AM (CET).

Terese Gagnon receives the Graduate Honorable Mention for the Marleigh Grayer Ryan Student Writing Prize from NYCAS

Our Postdoctoral Researcher Terese Gagnon received the Graduate Honorable Mention Winner Award for her paper "There are no Seeds Here. Severing Seed Sovereignty in Mae la Camp". Terese will present her paper on the New York Conference on Asian Studies on October 2nd (cf. paragraph above).

Standoff in Burma/Myanmar: What can be done?
 

Co-hosted with the New York Southeast Asia Network (NYESEAN) and the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, NIAS invites for this virtual talk that takes on the path to investigate what’s possible in the standoff in Myanmar following the wrangling at the UN General Assembly over who represents the country: the junta that seized power in February or the representative of the democratically elected but ousted government. The panel will explore what options are available to actors in Myanmar and to external actors, and delve into the dynamics and challenges facing the junta and the National Unity Government.

Inequality in Contemporary China 

Common prosperity is an important goal for the future development of the Chinese economy. This is a response to several decades of increasing inequality during the reform era. Which groups of the Chinese population have so far missed out on the advantages of rapid economic growth? What is their situation? In this Seminar Series, organized by the University of Oslo and chaird by Dr. Jingyu Mao,  Reza Hasmath will introduce his book "Ethnicity and Inequality in China" and Manfred Elfstrom will present his new addition "Workers and Change in China".

Rooms Within China is a kaleidoscopic collection of 100 photographs captured by 20 of the most noteworthy contemporary photographers from China. Originating from a wide array of areas, generations and artistic approaches, the contributors altogether form an eclectic image of Chinese contemporary photography and illustrate a broad spectrum of expressions within the complex and diverse phenomenon that is China.

The Killing Season: A History of the Indonesian Massacres, 1965-66

Gendered Engagements with the Covid-19 Pandemic 

The National Central Library of Taiwan invites together with Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and Taiwanese Feminist Scholars Association to the Roundtable Discussion “Gendered Engagements with the Covid-19 Pandemic” that takes place in the framework of the 7^th Sino-Nordic Gender and Women Studies Conference and the "Gendering Transformations" Online Conference. 
 
The Roundtable Discussion marks the opening of the conference and touches upon feminist engagements during the pandemic, ranging from raising cirtical discourses, taking actions and impacts on Covid-19 governances.

Gendering Transformations

The National Central Library of Taiwan invites together with Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS), the Sino-Nordic Gender Studies Network and the Taiwanese Feminist Scholars Association to the online conference “Gendering Transformations” taking place virtually on October 28th- 31st 2021.  

This conference focuses on the strategies for and complexities in feminist transformative practices at local, regional, national and transnational levels. Critical engagements with the possibilities and limitations of transformation – of differences that make a difference – through intersectional perspectives are important and timely in the face of a series of global challenges and crises such as economic and ecological crisis, refugee crisis, ageing society, increased inequalities and polarization of the society. It is crucial to ask not only the how of the transformations, but also who are the driving forces behind the transformations, and how the feminist movements are positioned in these transformations from different geopolitical locations. To address these questions, continued discussions on the relationship and dynamics between feminist academic and activist practices are necessary. The aim of the conference is thus to explore the complexities of power relations at work in the multiple modalities of feminist academic and activist engagements.
