OCTOBER 2021

2021 SURF ART CURATOR

Welcome Monique Garood

We would like to introduce and welcome the Curator of the 2021 Surf art exhibition, Monique Garrood.
Monique is an artist and event manager, with experience in developing and presenting arts, community and cultural events and exhibitions.

In Monique’s words … "I look forward to working with surfers, artists and lovers of the coastline and beauty which surrounds us to celebrate all that is, Surf Art Culture in the City of Onkaparinga.
In times of uncertainty and change, never has the call to preserve and appreciate the natural world been stronger for me. The beauty and power of the coastline always draws me back. The recent visit by a mother and her calf at Christies Beach exemplifies this perfectly.
Art that showcases our environment is something we can keep close to our hearts always, a portal in time."

EXHIBITIONS

ROCK, STONE, EARTH
Onkaparinga Gallery and Red Rover Gallery
On display from 24 September – 25 October 2021

Rock, Stone, Earth is a celebration of the spectacular and unique geology of South Australia, seen through the eyes of a diverse collection of SA artists, both long established and new.

The geology of South Australia dates back more than 3,000,000,000 years, and some of the rock exposures around the State are of global significance. The exhibition aims to interest, inspire and educate visitors about the geological landscapes, rocks and minerals of South Australia. Some artists will interpret the theme in abstract, realistic or expressionist ways, and others will connect with the theme through use of earth materials.

Curated by Janine Baker and Stephen Johnson.  Featured artists: Quentin Gore, Stephen Skillitzi, the late Władysław Dutkiewicz, Adam Dutkiewicz, John Richardson, Janette Humble, Tina Moore, Deborah Odell, Gary Sauer-Thompson, Stephen Johnson and Janine Baker.

Diversity in the Land of Consecutive Circles
Nicholas S. Watson and Rick Hutchinson

Onkaparinga Gallery
On display Friday 29 October - Monday 6 December

Opening Saturday 30 October 2-4pm

Nicholas S. Watson and Rick Hutchinson are two mid-career artists living in the southern Yorke Peninsula of South Australia.  In this exhibition, the artists’ will present a range of their latest paintings, drawings and sculptures, responding to living and working in relative creative-isolation.  The artists’ idiosyncratic and distinct styles and techniques will lend the show an original, dynamic look and feel.

Rick’s thoughtful, humorous and quirky sculptures and drawings alternate with his deeply intricate exploration of the coastal environment in his paintings.

Nick’s new, large paintings are a marked departure from his typical landscape oeuvre, being complex and meticulously painted essays of classically romantic figures in an environment populated by changing and floating symbology.

PERFORMANCES

STILL TALKIN 'BOUT A REVOLUTION
Nancy Bates sings Tracy Chapman

Barkindji woman, and esteemed singer-songwriter, Nancy Bates reflects on the songs of Tracy Chapman, and their relevance to race relations in Australia today.

After four years on the road with Archie Roach, arguably Australia’s most compelling and talented writers and performers, Nancy has been spurred on to become a powerful presence in women’s prisons, an advocate for Mental Health, and Ambassador to the Australian Performing Rights Association.

Her powerful performances drench her audience in her love, her pain, and through deep dived words and sharp wit, deliver a 'call to action' that is impossible to ignore.

Through the songs of Tracy Chapman, Nancy Bates shines a light on the violation of Human Rights of Indigenous peoples in Australia, to stimulate hope and inspire affirmative action.

"It's not that we aren't speaking, and that we don't have solutions.  The solutions are well known, it's the inability of Australia to HEAR US, and to STAND BY US in our struggles and our triumphs, both of which are many." Nancy Bates 2021

Nancy Bates will be accompanied by esteemed musicians Kyrie Anderson, Felicity Freeman and Ryan Martin John to deliver an outstanding musical performance and revolutionary experience.

Saturday 6 November, 8pm
