What's new in Newton-le-Willows?

Congratulations to Newton-le-Willows Cricket Club - champions of the league!

The team have won promotion to the local Premier League after a convincing win over local rivals Rainford. 

It means the team will be competing at the highest level of amateur cricket next season - a fantastic achievement!

1. There was a lovely story in the St Helens Star this week about six-year-old Cooper, from Newton-le-Willows. The kindhearted boy has just climbed mount Snowdon to help raise money for children's cancer charity CHICS, who are supporting his sister Erin during her treatment for Leukaemia. Read more.

2. This week the Star also reported on the achievement of 17-year-old Eleanor Cairns from Newton. Eleanor, a budding darts player, competed in her first senior darts match just two days after her mum Cath sadly died. She told the paper her mum was her biggest supporter and would have wanted her to play. An amazing story. Read more.

3. Olly Murs is the latest big name to confirm he'll be playing up the road at Haydock Racecourse next year. Tickets are now on sale for the gig, which will be on Friday, 5 August 2022. Find out more.

Women's Institute welcomes new members

Viaduct Violets WI Newton-le-Willows are a friendly group of women who meet on the third Tuesday of the month at Newton Social Club.

The group have different speakers every month, covering a wide range of subjects, and many of the sessions involve ‘hands on’ activities to get you trying something new!

The Viaduct Violets also arrange trips and outings to various places throughout the year – a chance to enjoy new experiences and visit different places with your fellow WI members.

If you're interested to join, simply come and join one of their meetings as a guest and see what you think!

St Helens College School Leaver's Event

If your son or daughter is in Year 11, you're probably thinking about what they'll do after GCSEs.

Roadworks to watch out for 

 
There are a series of roadworks currently underway in and around Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown which may impact on your journeys over the next week or so. 

There are currently temporary lights on Newton High Street, whilst works begin on Market Street, Earlestown, from next Monday. And works by Electricity North West mean Borron Road in Newton-le-Willows will have temporary traffic lights from today.

Gardening tip of the week: 
Plant some bulbs for spring

Now is a good time to plant some bulbs for an easy and cheerful display next spring.

Add bulbs such as daffodil, hyacinth, crocus and iris for lovely spring colour.If you love alliums, they can also be planted into the ground now.  

However, don’t plant tulip bulbs just yet – it’s best to wait until November for these.
