SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Aerial Operations
This month, CLZ and DNPW were able to conduct helicopter operations. During the first operation three elephants were darted and collared to better understand their movements and improve methods of wildlife protection and mitigation of human-wildlife conflict.

During the second operation, CLZ and DNPW deployed teams in areas that are hard to reach and transported infrastructure and equipment to improve the radio and observation point on top of Chilapira. Snared elephants were discovered during both operations and the helicopter allowed CLZ and DNPW to respond swiftly to their aid.

Thank you to FZS and INL for funding the second operation, John Morgan for supporting the elephant collaring, and to veterinarians Dr Innocent Ngombwa and Dr Ian Parsons.

Chongwe Confluence

Chongwe Confluence is the main entry point to the Lower Zambezi National Park by boat however, the infrastructure and security was in serious need of improvement.  CLZ has therefore constructed a new base and improved this entrance to the park which finished this month.

This base will house DNPW and CLZ's soon to be established Marine Unit and help provide security for the Lower Zambezi on the water and the land. Thank you to CITES MIKE and the European Union for supporting this project.

Wildlife Crime Prevention Media Visit

This September, CLZ hosted a media visit conducted by WCP to shed light on the issues within the Lower Zambezi National Park. This visit highlighted the rise in small-scale illegal mining, the risks of the illegal bush meat trade, and one of the biggest threats to the National Park – the Kangaluwi Copper Mine, a proposed large scale open-pit copper mine in the centre of the Park which will put communities and wildlife at risk. Wildlife Ranger Challenge

On September 18th, CLZ's team joined over 2,000 rangers across 24 African countries in Tusk's Wildlife Ranger Challenge. The goal of the Challenge is to raise money to support the men and women across Africa’s protected areas.

CLZ is immensely proud of our team who finished this 21 km race in full kit carrying 22 kg backpacks with a time of 2 hours and 35 minutes!

Community HWC Workshops

This month, CLZ held three community workshops in Chiawa and Rufunsa GMAs aimed at addressing the issue of Human-Wildlife Conflict. These workshops focus on working with communities to coexist with wildlife by giving them the tools to understand elephant behaviour and prevent negative interactions between people and wildlife.

A new tactic was also introduced during the workshops: a Smelly Elephant Repellent, which is a concoction used in other countries across Africa to repel elephants and prevent crop raiding. These workshops were attended by 244 people from the communities, 112 of which were women.

Thank you to
Tusk Trust and EMA for supporting these workshops.

Elephant Charge

Each year, the Elephant Charge challenges teams to complete a punishing four-wheel drive course to raise funds for conservation in Zambia. CLZ's Mudhogs team placed third overall and the Lady Hogs team finished the course second in the Silky Cup.
