News and Opinion

From The Times: Poor ‘nearly twice as likely’ to wait a year for treatment
From HSJ:
From MedScape:
From The Guardian: Black surgeons ‘promoted far less than white colleagues in England’
"Black men who were junior surgeons in 2010 were 27% less likely to be promoted to consultant than white men between 2016 and 2020, while black women were 42% less likely. The stark evidence of a glass ceiling has raised warnings that treatment may suffer unless senior ranks are made more representative and “old boys’ networks” dismantled. The Royal College of Surgeons described the study of more than 3,000 doctors as “deeply concerning”..."
Blog from The King's Fund: Tackling the elective backlog – exploring the relationship between deprivation and waiting times
"Long waiting times and growing waiting lists for hospital treatment have been a problem for some time, but now the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue and waiting lists have grown rapidly. As with other aspects of the pandemic, this has not been experienced equally. This analysis of waiting list data shows a clear relationship with deprivation, which sees those living in the most deprived areas nearly twice as likely to wait more than a year for treatment compared to those living in the least deprived areas..."

From NHS Confederation:
From NHS Employers: Inclusive recruitment: increasing supply, widening access to employment and addressing inequality
"As an anchor institution the NHS can play a key role in addressing the inequalities that persist in our communities by providing work opportunities..."
From The King's Fund:
From The Royal College of Physicians: Powerful stories make the case for a cross-government strategy to reduce health inequalities
"Over 90 senior representatives of the Inequalities in Health Alliance (IHA) have written to the Prime Minister calling for a cross-government strategy to reduce health inequalities... The letter makes calls for a cross-government health inequalities strategy with clear measurable goals, that consider the role of every department and every available policy lever..."

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Nursing: The Pathway to Excellence Framework Alignment
"The promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in nursing is a topic of renewed importance, given the civil unrest following the death of George Floyd and identified disparities in health and health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its progress, the nursing profession continues to struggle with recruiting and retaining a workforce that represents the cultural diversity of the patient population. The authors completed a review of the literature on DEI in nursing and found a scarcity of studies, and that a limitation exists due to the strength of the evidence examined. This article aims to provide a review of the literature on DEI in nursing, outcomes and strategies associated with organizational DEI efforts, and knowledge on how the American Nurses Credentialing Center Pathway to Excellence® Designation Program framework supports DEI initiatives. The authors further provided recommendations for nurse leaders and a checklist of proposed questions for assessing commitment, culture, and structural empowerment initiatives toward a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization..."
Unequal impact of the COVID-19 crisis on minority ethnic groups: a framework for understanding and addressing inequalities
"In this paper, we describe a framework for understanding the pathways that have generated ethnic (and racial) inequalities in COVID-19. We suggest that differences in health outcomes due to the pandemic could arise through six pathways: (1) differential exposure to the virus; (2) differential vulnerability to infection/disease; (3) differential health consequences of the disease; (4) differential social consequences of the disease; (5) differential effectiveness of pandemic control measures and (6) differential adverse consequences of control measures. Current research provides only a partial understanding of some of these pathways. Future research and action will require a clearer understanding of the multiple dimensions of ethnicity and an appreciation of the complex interplay of social and biological pathways through which ethnic inequalities arise. Our framework highlights the gaps in the current evidence and pathways that need further investigation in research that aims to address these inequalities..."
Cultivating allyship through casual mentoring to promote diversity
"Recent societal upheavals have highlighted stark inequalities that affect the livelihood of marginalized individuals pursuing research careers. Established scientists have a unique role to play as casual mentors, or experienced scholars who are well-positioned to serve as allies to early career researchers by informally advising on academia’s hidden curriculum..."
Diversity, equity, and inclusion in anesthesiology
"Disparities in population health are driven by a dynamic set of factors, known as social determinants of health. Although individuals may not have a direct influence over the upstream social factors (poverty, homelessness, racism) that drive disparities, awareness of the complex social determinants of health at an individual level may facilitate efforts to improve health outcomes. In addition, awareness of how health care, as a component of social determinants of health, is associated with health disparities can also serve as a driving force for change. In this manuscript, we provide working definitions and discuss concrete ways to uncover and mitigate factors that contribute to disparities in health care. We begin at the level of health care systems before focusing on care processes and patient-level factors..."
