October at Curry Public Library

Curry Public Library Welcomes New Board Member Kelly Margolis

We are pleased to announce that at their September board meeting, the Curry Public Library District board appointed Kelly Margolis as their newest board member to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of long-time board member John Harper. The library owes John a sincere thanks for using his construction and design experience to help guide the library through two construction projects, and for his deep love of the arts and literature. A life long user of Curry Public Library, teacher, and avid champion of reading, Kelly is a great fit for the library board. We thought the occasion provided an opportunity to introduce you to the members of our board. Each month, we will feature one of our five library board members in our newsletter and online, to help you get to know them a little better.

This month, we started by asking our newest board member some questions about the role of books and libraries in her life. Here is our conversation with Kelly:

What book are you currently reading?
Rock Paper Scissors, by Alice Feeney

What was the first book you can remember reading on your own?
Go, Dog, Go! by P.D. Eastman

Do you have a favorite book? If so, what is it?
I can’t pick just one, I have to many favorites.

Do you prefer hardcovers, paperbacks, or audiobooks? Why?
I love them all! All of them are great ways to enjoy escaping into a new world, or learning about something new. I really enjoy hardback books because they are new and I feel like the first person getting to experience the book. Paperbacks are nice because they aren’t so heavy and I usually take 3 or 4 on vacation and leave them in our rental houses for someone else to enjoy. I commute to work each day so I listen to audiobooks and really enjoy experiencing listening to the different readers bring the book to life.

As an adult, have you ever read a graphic novel? If you have, what did you like or not like about it?
I read The Adventures of TinTin to my children. My husband read them as a kid and wanted to share them with our children. I really enjoyed Tin Tin’s relationship with all of the characters. I could done without the drunk Captain Haddock. We had many discussions about appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior because of him.

What role have libraries played in your life?
Every summer as young as I could remember the summer reading program was a part of my life. I remember walking to the old library with my mom, my brother and the neighbor kids. We would gather up a large bag of books, walk them home and scatter to find a quiet place to read. As a college student I spent a large amount of time studying and researching at the library. I have always loved how quiet a library is, I find it calming and reassuring. As a mother I spent many hours each week taking my own children for story hour and participating in the summer reading program. Now that my children are young adults I get to read for my own pleasure and I use online check out and interlibrary loan, which are incredible services for a hectic schedule.

What is something about Curry Public Library that you really like?
I love how it always changes with the art, the activities and showcases different talents. I appreciate how helpful the staff and volunteers are and their welcoming attitude. I especially like hearing about all of the outreach programs that they provide for the youngest to the oldest members of our library.

What is some inside information about the library that not everyone knows, that you would like to share?
I don’t have any inside information but I’m curious to learn more.

Coastline Libraries Roll Out New Online Catalog

We are always looking to improve the quality of your library experience, which is why shortly after finishing our new website in January 2021, out staff began to quietly work with the other Coastline librarians on a new library discovery system, which we just launched for public use on September 27th. The new catalog, powered by Aspen Discovery software, has a lot of great features. Most of the features are available now, while others will gradually be phased in over the coming months. Even without the bells and whistles that will be phased in over time, the upgrade from our old catalog will probably surprise you.

What are the highlights?

Imagery: The new catalog utilizes browsable cover art, and lots of it. Love browsing the shelves in person? This gets you closer to that experience.
Integration: The new catalog integrates the discovery of much more than just traditional library items, including eBooks and e-Audio, which you used to have to search in the Library2Go system. No more. Simply search our catalog, find your eBook, request your item, and it should be automatically delivered to your Overdrive app!
Grouping: No more sifting through 100 different search results for the same title. All editions of every different form of each title is consolidated and grouped into a single search result. So for Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, you can look at your single search result and choose whether you want paperback, hardcover, large print, graphic novel, audiobook, or movie.
Readers Advisory: The catalog now includes book summaries, reviews, author bios, and the ability to find items similar to ones you have already read.
Quick Links: Have you ever wondered what is sitting on our new book table when deciding whether it is worth braving the rain to come to the library? The main search page now includes quick links to browsable book covers for all of the items we have sitting on our new tables, as well as other sections in the library. These are updated in real time so there is no guesswork.

The catalog includes many other features; start exploring and let us know your favorites. As you explore, keep in mind that your account login is your entire library barcode number and your password is the last six digits of your card number. Happy exploring!

New Equipment for the Tech Lab

We are more than a little excited to announce the arrival of several new pieces of equipment for our tech lab which were specifically planned purchases for this budget year. Our staff have been busy unpacking, assembling, testing, and let's be honest, completely geeking out over the new additions! Here's what's new in the tech lab:

Epson SureColor 44” wide-format inkjet printer, model number P9570. This giant printer prints high quality posters or even art work.
A large format cutter with rotary blade for cutting paper, posters, and even fabric.
An Elegoo Mars 2 resin SLA printer. While we have a 3D printer already in the tech lab, this 3D resin printer uses a different process and allows users to print objects with much finer detail.
Two heavy duty Singer sewing machines. We're excited to have not one, but two machines to allow more people to use them, or to allow someone to follow along with a friend or instructor.
Green screen. This generous donation from the Rotary Foundation of Gold Beach allows users to have a virtual background when creating video content.

Curious to see the new equipment for yourself, or to give it a whirl? Drop in to the lab during open hours, Mondays between 10am-3pm, Wednesdays between 12pm-4pm, and Saturdays between 1pm-5pm, or by appointment.

Last but not least, mark your Saturdays in October as tech program and demo days continue! Drop in between 11am-4pm on October 2 for a Vinyl Cutter Demo, October 16 for a Large Format Printer Demo, and October 30 for a Sewing Machine Demo. On October 9, tech lab coordinator Brodey Carpenter will offer a Zoom talk and discussion on Digital Minimalism at 10am. Join us for a hands-on workshop Intro to Digital Sketching on October 23 at 10am. Space is limited, so please be sure to register here for the workshop. Paintings by Lucie La Bonté on Display October-December

Paintings by Lucie La Bonté will be on display in the 2nd floor gallery at Curry Public Library October 5-December 31. Please drop in to view the paintings for free during library open hours.

Lucie La Bonté grew up in Upper Montclair, New Jersey in a family that valued the arts. At a young age her parents educated their three children with art, music, and drama lessons. Her father Dick La Bonté retired at 55 from McGraw Hill and began a successful art career. Her sister Anne, who also paints, ran the Anchor and Pallet Gallery selling his work. Her mother volunteered in numerous plays and shows (Children’s Theater and Follies) when Lucie was small. Her brother Rich is a musician.

After graduating from the High School division of Greenbrier College in West Virginia Lucie chose to major in Art. There she learned batik, a craft which she has practiced for many years. After Lucie’s first year of college at Greenbrier College she transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University where she attained her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Printmaking. Her focus was Abstract Expressionism and Lithography. Then she moved west.

In 1977 Lucie met her husband Peter Giampaoli, who was one of the first San Francisco street artists. Peter developed a line of jewelry, and they went on the road. They toured the country selling a festivals and flea markets, Lucie selling batik. They lived for two years in New Orleans selling at the French Market.

In 1983 Peter and Lucie built their house at Cape Ferrelo and continued with their crafts at numerous fairs, the Eugene Saturday Market and the Oregon Country Fair. Lucie then began painting small landscapes and seascapes of the Oregon Coast.

After working in management for local Ports and Curry County, Lucie retired and continued painting and selling batiks at the Oregon Country Fair. During the COVID crisis the Fair has taken a two-year break. Lucie focused on her paintings and learning the clarinet. The paintings exhibited here were painted during the COVID period except for “The Crow’s Nest”. They are painted in either oil or acrylic.

October Last Month for Outdoor Movies in 2021

October is the final month of the 2021 movie season! Join us most Saturdays in October; view the scheduled below. We are not able to show the outdoor movies if it is raining. If rain is in the forecast, please check our website, Facebook page, or call us at 541-247-7246 the day of the showing to find out the status!

Haven't been to an outdoor movie yet? Here's how it works. Movie goers can watch from the comfort of their car, or set up with lawn chairs and blankets in our parking lot. Like all library programs, the movies are free. Concessions are available by donation. Restrooms are available in the library lobby. Start times for the movies will move earlier as the season progresses, along with the setting sun.

COVID-19 UPDATES

Masks are required for all library visitors. Our main library area, lobby, and restrooms are open to patrons and cleaned regularly. We maintain a no-contact shelf in the lobby where patrons can easily pick up requested items. All returned library items are cleaned before they are returned to the shelves.
