Meet Mr. Tekiela, our new Automotive Technology Instructor for the CTE Program
Hi! I'm Mr. Tekiela, and I was an automotive technician with new car dealers for 22 years before I became a full-time educator. I learned about cars in high school auto shop and then through the GM ASEP program at Triton College. The ASEP program is a work-study program that requires a job at a GM dealer to enroll. This program got me into the dealer setting directly out of high school. In 2019 I started teaching part-time at College of DuPage. I loved teaching and soon pursued a full-time education role, which eventually let me to KEC where I am excited to work with potential technicians and students seeking automotive knowledge.
Meet Mr. Carr, our new English/Rhetorical Analysis of Media Instructor for Phoenix Academy
Howdy all! My name is Mr. Carr and I am the new English/Rhetorical Analysis of Media teacher at KEC's Phoenix Academy! I've lived in Sandwich, IL my whole life (with the brief exception of living in Peoria while attending Bradley University down there). My wife and I are proud dog-parents to our Beaglehound Sami. KEC has graciously given me my first full-time teaching position. I am active with my local community theatre Indian Valley Theatre and am even currently directing "Dracula... the Musical?" with them (October 22-23 at 7:30pm, October 24 at 2pm, Sandwich Opera House). My other hobbies include: tabletop role-playing games, reading and writing comic books, bookbinding, and watching professional wrestling. I am so excited to be a part of the KEC Community!

Medical Terminology and Sports Medicine
CTE PROGRAMS
In our Medical Terminology class, students spent the first few weeks learning about the musculoskeletal system discussing directional terms and creating t-shirts to get a 3D view in helping them learn the terms. They are now in the dermatology chapter and have been working on 3D skin projects in class.

The Sports Medicine class spent the first few weeks discussing blood borne pathogens and basic anatomy, and created t-shirts to help learn and study.
Ms. Luoma's Classroom Happenings
PHOENIX ACADEMY
US History:
For our first unit, we learned about the history of Native Americans and their various cultures. Students were tasked with researching two historical native tribes and creating a presentation either on paper or digitally. They learned about native dress, food, housing, clothes, and cultural ceremonies.

Computers:
My computer class learned how to use conditional formatting in Google Sheets to create Pixel Art. The students had to format each cell to the correct color to match the picture.
Criminal Justice
CTE PROGRAM

Meet Mr. Petragallo

Hello! My name is Mr. Petragallo and I am the long-term substitute instructor for Criminal Justice at KEC in Mr. Jaques’ absence. My wife and I live in rural Malta where we raised our two daughters, both of which are attending college. I went to Northern Illinois University where I studied Sociology and later public administration. I am recently retired from the DeKalb Police Department. I spent 27 years in law enforcement and was fortunate to have been able to navigate a variety of positions within the department. I taught criminal justice classes in the past at Kishwaukee Community College and enjoyed the experience immensely. That experience is what drew me to temporarily fill this position. I have been enjoying my time here, and am excited to be a part of the KEC community!

The Illinois Army National Guard came to KEC to do an ethics training

Fall Into Good Grades

PHOENIX ACADEMY
After the success of "Spring Into Great Grades" last year, Phoenix Academy has revamped our academic incentive as "Fall Into Good Grades." This semester our mentor groups will be competing against each other for the best GPA average. The group with the highest average will win a fabulous prize. We are also awarding the group that has the most improved score. The first round starts on Monday Sept. 27th and will end Friday Oct. 22nd. The staff has created a fun bulletin board for students to see their group's standing in the competition.
Our CNA, Criminal Justice, Fire Science and Sports Medicine students completed their CPR training this week with the help of the KEC EMT-B Instructors.
