Almost a year ago at this time, Bishop Candea wrote;
“I walk every morning and go for longer hikes on the weekends which have helped me stay healthy both physically and spiritually.”
If you follow her Facebook page , then you know that as the bishop travels across our synod, she will seek out scenic locations, often sharing photos from some of those daily walks and weekend hikes. This past Sunday while hiking with her son at Clinton Lake in Lawrence KS, Bishop Candea fell, dislocating and breaking her left elbow. She is scheduled for surgery this Friday and will be out of the office for the foreseeable future as she recovers.
While her leadership is missed, the synod office continues to manage the business at hand. Should you need anything, please contact Rev. Dave Whetter , Bishop’s Associate at the synod office (913) 948-9701. Thank you for your prayers for Bishop Candea's health and speedy recovery.
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kanas City, MO ( Facebook page )
Immanuel.'s 2021 " God's Work. Our Hands ." theme for was "Feed the Hungry Hundreds."
On Saturday, Sept. 11, Immanuel volunteers packed hundreds of sack lunches that now are helping to feed hungry people served by Gathering Table in northeast Kansas City.
On Sunday, Sept. 12, the congregation donated food for and then packed more than 1,100 sack lunches that already are helping to feed hungry people served by Metro Lutheran Ministry in central Kansas City.
Our goal was to help feed the hungry hundreds ... but we helped feed the hungry thousands! It truly was God's work with our hands.

You are invited to use the prepared bulletin insert that Sunday and/or this video . The bulletin insert contains additional information as well as prayer suggestions for Sunday, October 3rd, and the video is part of a zoom conversation with Pastor Alexander Lapochenko with missionary Bradn Buerkle translating. The Central States Synod is looking for two young people, in grades 9-12, to attend the ELCA Youth Leadership Summit at the Marriott Downtown in Minneapolis, MN November 4-7, 2021.
The 2021 ELCA Youth Leadership Summit equips youth leaders through workshops, speakers, and other hands-on activities. The youth will be challenged to take home what they learn at the Summit and inspire action in their own synods, congregations and communities. Another priority of this event is to help these high school youth “look toward” their next faith community. The Summit invites staff from Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, Lutheran Campus Ministries, Lutheran Colleges and Universities, YAGM, Young Adult Ministries, and an ELCA Military Chaplain to share how young people can connect after high school. Youth will also have an opportunity to see where the 2022 ELCA Gathering will be held and get to run through the Gathering’s Synod Day curriculum.
All lodging, meals, and programming are provided by a gracious grant from the ELCA. The Synod will pay for half of transportation costs; the congregation and/or family pay for the other half of transportation costs.
Applicants must:

“The pandemic was a stark illustration of the fact that the church is not a building,” said Sandra Rudd, pastor of Sitka (Alaska) Lutheran Church. “A lot of people say that, but we didn’t fully know it until we didn’t have a building to use. We learned that there are many ways to be connected as the church.”
