October 2021 - Part 2
The Bridgeport Art Trail at-a-Glance!
The Bridgeport CT creative community is unformidable! After adapting the annual Bridgeport Art Trail (BAT) city-wide open studio arts celebration to an online event in 2020, they are planning a robust schedule of events. The 2021 BAT theme is “Discovery and Re-invention.” Here’s a sample of the rich and unusual activities taking place from 11/11-11/14/21.

See the BAT plans as they are being finalized.
Check this website for the at-a-glance schedule

TH-SUN  HIGHLIGHTS
The four-day art weekend begins on Thurs 11/11/21 with a downtown artists’ party, with exhibits, live music, and outdoor projection art. Participating venues include Ursa Gallery and the Arcade Mall artists and shops, City Lights gallery, lionheART Gallery, Twig Lips Studios, the Firm Gallery, and Berlinetta Brewing for a post-party.

A fancy, BAT fundraiser is hosted by Paier College, remembering the unassuming collector, Bridgeporter Harry Laurie who amassed an impressive art collection. Collectors and curiosity-seekers can catch a preview of select works on view for one night at the Paier College Gallery, which recently moved to the once University of Bridgeport campus. Attendees will enjoy lite bites, drink and live Gypsy Swing music by the Hot Club of Black Rock.

On Sat & Sun 11/13 & 14, artists open their studios to the public from 11-5 pm. Sites include Read’s ArtSpace, American Fabrics, The Knowlton, The NEST Arts Factory, and the newest site Metro Arts Studios. The full listing and the arts directory will be available in a printed program book at participating spaces and on bridgeport-art-trail.org. Here are the Bridgeport Art Trail highlights at-a-glance.
PROJECTION ART ON
THE CANNON BUILDING

The Thursday night BAT Artists’ party kicks off the weekend celebration with art exhibits, live music, and projection art at 9 sites within a few downtown blocks. The wall of the quaint Cannon St landmark building has a wall facing Broad St perfect for projection art. It’s adjacent to the Read’s ArtSpace, living/working spaces, and the creative entrepreneur venues of the Arcade Mall, including Cris Dam and Dustin Malstrom’s Ursa Gallery and Liz Squillace’s Paradox Ink.

Projection art will include original music videos of local artists and a slide show of Bridgeport Art Trail art. This year’s popular art party is designed as an indoor/outdoor meander and mingle to accommodate Covid 19 best practices. Yes, face masks will be required indoors.

URSA GALLERY EXHIBIT
The Coral Reef Principle Opens for the 2021 BAT

The Coral Reef Principle, Ursa Gallery features 50 artists addressing global climate change and all the associated economic and social justice issues related to it. One of the exhibitors, Ken  Butler, constructs string instruments resembling guitars and cellos from found objects. Ken will close out the art weekend at the Bijou Theatre with an astonishing musical performance on his musical creations; “..a crazy instrument builder who can get virtuoso riffs from anything.”  The Village Voice

He has performed and exhibited on the Jay Leno show, the Museum of Modern Art, and others.

Ken Butler builds and performs with instruments made of found objects. You know the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Ken uses all sorts of found/discarded objects from a vintage ax, tennis racket, a rifle gun stock, even a tailor’s female mannequin. He calls his playable constructions “Bricloleuthiery”. This is the combination of bricolage- creating something from whatever is available and luthiery- the artisanal practice of constructing and repairing string instruments.

Butler will discuss and present various instruments and then play them! Critics describe his music as “mesmerizing world textures and driving melodic grooves with passion and purpose on an amazing arsenal of amplified hybrid string instruments made from household objects and tools. Duchampian Dada meets Hybrid Hindu Hendrix as function and form collide in an environment of hyperactive hardware.

Butler blends aspects of Mid-Eastern, Indian, Flamenco, and Roma modes with jazz, rock, funk, and blues, all held together by an open, edgy "downtown" improv aesthetic. Virtually indescribable and unclassifiable, Butler mixes high and low technology and audio-visual antics to create an ancient/future music that forms a provoking cultural portrait of human/machine adaptation and transformation.”
BEER BRUNCH WITH ART AT
BERLINETTA BREWING

Sunday, November 14, 2021
After taking in art all weekend, it may be time to chill out, and consume art with a beer. Yup, we did it. We figured out an art event that pleases everyone, art lovers and beer lovers. Yes, some love both. Breaking the wine and cheese reception model, Berlinetta and the BAT host a Beer Brunch/Artists Talk with renowned artist Tom Sanford, whose painting at Berlinetta enshrines Cliff from Cheers a.k.a. Bridgeport’s John Ratzenberger as the Patron Saint of Beer, at least Berlinetta’s awesome Czech-style Pilsner.

Sanford’s playfully sardonic aesthetic infuses the essential elements of iconography (halos, gold leaf, symbolism) with humor. He playfully packs a lot of iconic imagery representing Bridgeport into this well-designed composition; an elephant holding a Berlinetta beer can, a Remington rifle, and the iconic power plant gracing the background with its identifiable red and white stack. Meet the artist Tom Sanford at an Artist’s Talk & Beer Brunch on Sunday 11/14/21, 1PM at Berlinetta Brewing, 90 Golden Hill Street Bridgeport.
CITY LIGHTS GALLERY "IT'S COMPLICATED"
Opens 11/11 for the BAT

Curator Suzanne Kachmar asks viewers to find the beauty in complexity.

Artists: Maralyn Adlin, Carlos Bautista Biernnay, Claude Desir Jr, Dan Makara, Marcella Kurkowski, Tunde Odunlade, Mark Rich, Gerald Saladyga, Isabella Saraceni, Roxanne Faber Savage, Scott Schuldt, Joan Wheeler

Fiber art, paintings, drawing, and assemblage in this exhibit contain contradictory, ambiguous content with complex imagery and compositions. Although materials and techniques vary, all artists in this exhibit practice the sincere process of artmaking, combining automatism, criticism, and plan.

“Creativity is messy. Life is complicated.” Curator Suzanne Kachmar suggests we practice sitting with complexity and find the beauty there. “I suggest we acknowledge that conditions, ‘facts’ and perspectives are a mash-up of information, feelings, and learned bias, where more than one point of view or logic can be true. In life and in the art in this exhibit, there is often more to a story than what we see on the surface. As we try to make sense of things, remember that existence of any form is an ever-changing battle between order and entropy. It’s complicated!”

“We are living in a time fraught with contentious polarization, hubris, disruption, and a lack of trust, that tests loyalties and exposes who we are, what we need to change and cherish. We may tend to settle with those who have similar perspectives, rather than doing the work to find the answers that are in the mess somewhere in the middle, between the extremes.”

This exhibit encourages the viewer to spend time with complexity and uncertainty and find meaning from the personal interaction with the art. The show is designed to encourage that we maintain an open mind and an open heart. The exhibit runs through January 8, 2022. The show includes looking guides to enhance the viewing experience.

Legacy of a Collector:
Remembering Harry Laurie Through the Art He Collected

We added one fancy event to the BAT hosted at Paier College, which recently moved to the once University of Bridgeport campus. “Legacy of the Collector” recognizes, the unassuming Bridgeport collector, Harry Laurie. This BAT fundraiser previews select works from his collection from Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Rauschenberg, Christo, Alice Neel, on exhibit for one night at the Paier gallery.

Collectors and curiosity-seekers can catch a preview of select works from an extensive art collection on view at this Bridgeport Art Trail fundraiser, enjoying reception fare and live music by the Hot Club of Black Rock, an acoustic Gypsy swing band.

The life of Bridgeport native, Harry Laurie and his passion for collecting art is a jumble spanning from Woodstock to a truck driving Teamster amassing an impressive collection of art and collectibles, including Josef Albers, Banksy, Alice Neel, Shephard Fairey, Robert Rauschenberg, Christo, Andy Warhol, William Wegman and the Spanish abstract painter Antoni Tapias. He was so intrigued by Tapias’ work he traveled to Spain to meet him.

Artist/friend Joann Moran has the task of cataloging the collection. She explains, “To understand the extent of Harry’s collection… it contains 157 signed Shepard Fairey prints alone.” When the pieces are auctioned and sold, a portion of sales will be donated to two Bridgeport arts and culture nonprofits, WPKN radio and City Lights/Bridgeport Art Trail.
