HRM is exploring options to potentially revitalize the Sackville Sports Stadium in future years. Your useful feedback will help the municipality understand the satisfaction rates with the existing design, layout, and amenities of the Sackville Sports Stadium, and guide what renovations, additions, or amenities will be investigated should revitalization take place in the future.

Halifax District 13 News

Councillor Pam Lovelace

October is Mi’kmaw History Month

The flag that is raised in Halifax for Indigenous events is the Grand Council Flag. We use this flag for Indigenous History Month, Treaty Day, and Mi’kmaq History Month. This is the flag the Mi’kmaq community uses to identify itself.

The Grand Council flag of the Mi’kmaq was designed to be hung vertically! If the flag is hung horizontally it is always with the star on the upper corner.

HRM’s Annual Volunteer Conference is coming up on Friday, November 9! It will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Dartmouth.

The volunteer conference is a celebration of the tremendous contributions of volunteers in the region. Residents get the opportunity to participate in training and networking to become more effective their work and provide strong volunteer capacity throughout the municipality.

Nova Scotians celebrate 39th annual Nova Scotia Fallen Peace Officers’ Memorial Service

Sunday, October 17 marks the 39th annual Peace Officers’ Memorial, which is held each year at Grand Parade in downtown Halifax. The event honours peace officers based in Nova Scotia who died in the line of duty and is a humbling reminder of the selflessness and dedication of those who lost their lives while serving others.

Peace officers, first responders, civilian employees, military personnel and volunteers will march from Police Headquarters on Gottingen Street to Grand Parade at 12:45pm prior to the service. Participants from across the province will then assemble at the Nova Scotia Fallen Peace Officers’ Monument for a brief ceremony where dignitaries will bring remarks and will lay wreaths along with peace officers and family members in memory of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Halifax Regional Council Celebrates Gender Parity Milestone
On October 18th, Canada commemorates Persons Day, an important milestone in the struggle for women’s rights and participation in Canadian political life. As we celebrate Persons Day, Halifax Regional Council is marking its first year of gender parity.

Since Catherine MacLean Sullivan was elected as a City of Halifax Alderman (person) in 1934, women have been active and important members of municipal government in the Halifax region. However, it was not until 2020 when Halifax Regional Council achieved two historic milestones: the election of the first woman of colour, Councillor Iona Stoddard, and a council with gender parity—which is equal representation of elected Councillors who identify as women and men.

The Halifax Regional Municipality values diversity and inclusion in all that we do, think, and pursue.

LEST WE FORGET

The Remembrance Day Ceremony has played a major role in Remembrance since 1931. Every year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we gather in memorial parks, community halls, workplaces, schools and homes to stand in honour of all who have fallen.

Pandemic restrictions have meant smaller ceremonies, or their outright cancellation. Other gatherings are being replaced with virtual ceremonies.

Nevertheless, the tradition of Remembrance will continue, and Canada’s Fallen will not be forgotten. The Royal Canadian Legion encourages all Canadians to observe a moment of silence on November 11, to mark the sacrifice of the many who have fallen in the service of their country, and to acknowledge the courage of those who still serve.

UPCOMING TRANSIT CHANGES
