Our presenters at this LIFE tutorial, will make the vital links between this year’s inspiring mobilisations for women’s rights to personal safety, and the underlying government policies that put women in danger, and must be changed.
_______________

Terese Edwards from The National Council For Single Mothers and Their Children, and Aradia Sayner, founder of Women in Poverty a board member of NCSMC are the presenters. Terese is a tireless advocate with a great depth of understanding of how government policies are responsible for women, and especially single mothers, and their children, living with poverty, insecurity, homelessness, and domestic violence.
Terese, Aradia and the NCSMC find brave and creative ways to work with women who want to speak out and win changes to government policies that make their lives, and the lives of their children, so difficult.

At this LIFE tutorial they will talk about the most recent issues that NCSMC has taken up. These include:
* Speaking at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, in support a complaint against the Australian Government lodged under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women to the United Nations.
* Winning the support (along with ACOSS) of the Australian Human Rights Committee’s recommendation to make the punitive ParentsNext program voluntary, but losing to a tied vote in the Senate.
* Calling out the government’s Women’s Safety Summit for its silence on the social safety net, and detailing to it eleven ways that social security works to harm women.
* Appearing before the Select Committee on Job Security, with statements from single mothers.

They will also explain how NCSMC was established and is governed, how it is fearless in speaking out against the government despite being government funded, how NCSMC manages to both provide a nurturing community for women who need privacy and security, and to elicit brave statements of personal struggles to build the case for change and win support.
There will be time for brief questions and comments, especially to discuss how the LIFE demands address these issues, and how to generate wider solidarity with single mothers and their children.
