RD38 WEEKLY UPDATE
October 17, 2021.
REDISTRICTING THE LEGISLATURE – HEARINGS START MONDAY
The House will host a hybrid hearing on Monday, October 18 to allow residents to comment on its proposed legislative redistricting maps. Registration is required for virtual participants.  The draft legislative district maps can be viewed here.  The Senate Virtual hearing will be Tuesday and in-person on Thursday.  More info at link.

The author’s quick view of the proposed Democratic and Republican proposals for the 38th RD area show that, as expected, RD38 can expect to lose some are from the western part of the district.  I can’t speak to the differences between the two areas, or the proposals overall.
REMINDER – SHORE DEMS WILL MEET ON OCTOBER 20
A reminder for those with reservations, Dr. Ted Spickler will be the speaker at the Bear Trap Dunes luncheon on Wednesday.  Announcement at (link).
ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE ROAD CLEANUP – OCTOBER 22nd
From 10 to 12 this Friday.  Volunteers will meet at the BP station across from Harris Teeter on Route 54.  If you are interested please contact Liz Salonick at earthwatch38@gmail.com.
JOIN YOUTH ACTIVISTS DEMANDING CLIMATE ACTION, FRIDAY OCTOBER 22nd IN GEORGETOWN
The Progressive Democrats of Sussex County are proud to support Fridays for Future Delaware, a group of young activists who want to change the trajectory of global warming.  They encourage others to join these young environment leaders at the Circle in Georgetown on Friday, October 22 from 3:30 to 4:30.  Detailed flyer here.

Sign suggestions:  Make it local – Loss of wetlands, the coal ash piles at Indian River Power plant; Make it state-focused –Delaware’s vulnerability to sea level rise, impact on farmers, net zero legislation; or Make it global –such as these.
LWVDE CONSIDERS UPDATE TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE POSITION
The LWVDE Criminal Justice Committee is working towards a possible concurrence by their League membership to adopt a position of the California League and subsequently adopted in other states.  LWVDE hopes their updated position will be in place by early January, when the General Assembly reconvenes with 13 Criminal Justice bills pending.  Leaders of the California Study will present to LWVDE membership.  For more details see: website; or event flyer.
COUNTY COUNCIL DENIES RT54 HOTEL/RESTAURANT
Ron Lewis reported the Council Votes: Hudson recused himself because of a conflict of interest.  Rieley introduced the request, spoke extensively about it, then voted against it because of its effect on traffic and the environment.  Council members Schaeffer and Green voted in favor of the request, but Council President Vincent voted against it, so it wound up a 2 - 2 tie, meaning it was defeated.  Ron and others that had demonstrated against the proposal were pleasantly surprised.  The Coastal Point has an article on the meeting at: link.

This is a rare win for our local environmental activists.
