December at
Tomlinson’s

Gift wrapping will be available in December at Tomlinson's Belterra Village. Be on the lookout for dates!
Pound4Pound is a proud tradition at Tomlinson’s every year. Between Black Friday and Christmas Eve, customers are invited to donate a bag of food to local rescues (like Thundering Paws), and all customer donations are matched by pet food manufacturers – pound for pound. Last year they raised over 180,000 lbs. of donated food, which kept Thundering Paws and many other rescue and foster groups fed for much of the year. We are beyond grateful for this partnership.

We plan to be onsite at our partner Tomlinson’s location in Belterra Village to support P4P. We will do your holiday gift-wrapping for a donation! One precious gift or a whole sleighful! Bring it on. Gift-wrapping dates to be shared soon!

Cats and Kittens Available for Adoption

Cats and kittens of all ages are wonderful, but this week, we wanted to highlight some of our fabulous adult cats that are looking for their furever homes!

There are so many great things about adopting an adult cat. Not only are they older and wiser, but they have their daily routine down to a science and are easy going after already learning the ropes of life. Adult cats are confident in their personalities and predictable in their behavior and mannerisms. No need to worry about supervision with these mature cats, you are free to go about your day, and they can hangout responsibly while you are away. They'll keep tabs on everything, don't worry. If you're looking for a laid back, well-mannered and responsible cat to seamlessly join your life, an adult cat just might be the answer! Here are some of our current wonderful adults that are available for adoption:

Naturi: This lovely older lady is the ultimate assistant and sidekick. She will sit next to your desk while you get your work done and supervise to make sure you filled out all your paperwork correctly. When you're ready to wind down for the day, Naturi will curl up next to you on the couch and make biscuits on her favorite blanket. She's there to keep you company and make your day that much better with her helpful presence.

Monkey: This diplomatic gentleman is a wonderful source of stability and reassurance. He will quietly keep you company when you wake up in the morning and get ready for your day and be your cozy shadow as you get things done around the house. He is the most polite sir, and likes to simply hangout and keep you company. If there was an award for best manners, Monkey would steal it in a heartbeat. Although...he is far too polite to steal anything, so he's fine with just an acknowledgment of his diplomatic ways.

Yuri: This sweet mama cat is a gentle and peaceful presence and loves belly rubs! She's a quiet observer and likes to live life in a lowkey manner. She's cool as a cucumber and loves spending time with her people. If you prefer a calmer pace to life and are looking for a gentle lovebug to keep you company, Yuri might be just the tranquil addition you are looking for!

We are currently accepting applications for these three fabulous cats. If you have any other questions about them, or want to know more about them, we would love to set up a zoom call for you to meet them!

Lola

Lola was the absolute ruler of her room at the Sanctuary. She will be missed by both humans and felines.
Lola and her litter mate, Oscar, were taken in around 13 years ago. They were trapped as kittens by a Thundering Paws donor, who kept them in a room behind the office of her furniture store. They were tame to the woman who owned the business--our donor--so she mistakenly billed them as tame, just a little frightened of new people. The furniture store was closing, and they had nowhere to go. Thundering Paws took them in.

One staff member touched Lola once while she was eating. We all spoke to her, of course, and acknowledged her when we entered her room. She never did the same to me, and I don't believe she did with anyone else either. We allowed her her distance.

She had one episode in which she was so ill she allowed herself to be scooted into a carrier. She went to the vet where she was found to have a urinary tract infection. After treatment with medication in her canned food, which, gratefully, she ate, she recovered and became her old self again.

Her "old self" was the absolute ruler of her room. At one time there were about seven cats in there and in the adjacent catio. No one gave Lola any trouble, nor tried to steal her food. She had only to look at a cat to have him or her back down from any thought of doing so.

Lola kept to herself, not only from people but from cats. She allowed Oscar to come close sometimes, but she was a loner. We all--cats and humans--respected her for that.

Last week she was found to be lethargic, so much so that she was again inveigled into a carrier. This time when she was taken to the vet, her kidney values were found to be very high. Since we could not treat her for her kidney failure, and she was suffering, the vet recommended euthanasia. We let her go.

Lola's room and catio was the home of the late Dash, whose eulogy you read last month. The two remaining residents of that room, Oscar and Skweeks, seem a bit lost. Like Dash, both of them have human friends.

Not only are Oscar and Skweeks lost, but we humans feel bereft. How can the loss of one small, feral cat, who never let anyone touch her, reverberate all over the sanctuary?

We are proponents of trap/neuter/vaccinate/return, which means to return to their home territory. Some feral cats, however, have no territory to which to return. Right now, a building project on South Lamar is displacing a colony of community cats. Their caretaker, and the cat community, have nowhere to place them.

We believe that Lola had as good a life as she could, given her circumstances. She was safe, fed, kept warm and cool, allowed a screened catio where she could chatter at birds and had her brother with her. We will be mourning her for some time.

We get to do all this because of your kindness. Your donations are the fuel for our mutual burning passion—these precious kitties. Thank you!
