Opportunity for Family SRLs to Help Train Lawyers

This fall NSRLP is working with the Ryerson Law Practice Program (LPP) to strengthen lawyer-training by involving self-represented litigants directly. Learning from self-reps will improve new lawyers' skills development and enhance their understanding of access to justice issues.

This innovative program combines the expertise of the NSRLP and the experience of self-represented litigants with the experiential training knowledge provided by the LPP.

“Lawyer licensing Candidates will have the opportunity to listen to, interview, obtain feedback from and practice advising those who have had to represent themselves in the justice system. This will deepen the lawyers’ understanding of who self-reps are, the challenges they face, and what they need to achieve justice. We are excited to be working with the LPP in this first of a kind program,” says NSRLP founder Julie Macfarlane.

“Self-represented litigants are the majority of those coming before our family courts. Directly involving them in the training of future lawyers will provide an excellent opportunity for the lawyers to enhance their skills in a structured setting before they enter practice,” says Chris Bentley, Managing Director LPP.

We are in need of self-represented litigants interested in participating virtually in this unique endeavour. We are able to pay participants an honorarium of $600 for their participation. If you are:

- an SRL or former SRL with experience in the family law system, and
- available both Tuesday, October 26, 9am-1pm AND Tuesday, November 16, 1pm-4pm (EST) (participants must be available on both dates, for the entire time periods),

please email us at representingyourself@gmail.com to communicate your interest.
